Waitomo’s Visitor Centre was promoting their own experiences at a huge cost. This is not as spectacular, granted, but FREE, done on your own terms, at your own pace and without a guide. And, if you want to see glowworms, come here as the sunsets, also, free. Do the Ruakuri Loop Track, starting at the WVC. It takes 40 minutes... More

This is a nice fairly easy walk although there are several staircases so unsuitable for the physically challenged – took about 40 minutes (says 30 but allow 10 for photos) – I had a sketch map from the B & B but there is a display map at the entrance – some informative signage – the well maintained pathway leads... We did it when the sunset was starting and it was amazing! So if you want to safe money and you want to see glowworms do the Ruakuri Loop Track - it's awesome. We started at the Waitomo Visitor Center and walked about 45min till the Loop Track started. If you do it by darkness take a torch with you,... More

The cave is really beautiful also we got very impressed by the man-made entrance. You can also see glowworm in this cave but not that many.

Did this walk after visiting the glow worms cave took around 20-30 mins, then returned after dark so that we could see the glow worms up close, really beautiful!

Decided to take a trip to this cave as it offered a lot more than just glow worms and we were not disappointed. The guide walked us through about 1 km of caves explaining formations, glow worms and the historical significance of the site with a great passion. Decided to do the overground walk afterwards which was well worth it... More

One of the best short walks in NZ, I think. I have been on this walk multiple times when visiting the Waitomo Caves with friends. It has beautiful limestone formations and a number of caves and views down into the stream below. Gorgeous native bush. Visit at night with a torch to see the glowworms near the bridge. Very special... More

This must be one of NZ's top short bush walks, complete with a couple of small caves and amazing limestone rock formations. Go at night and see glow worms twinkling in the bush. All for free!

Sorry to say you have to be on the slim side to make it throught the entrance door. Still think this is the best walking cave of all. Well worth paying for.
