THE WAITOMO GLOWWORM CAVES World renowned and a magnet for both local and overseas visitors, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves occupy a high placing in the New Zealand vacation wish-list. The glow worm, Arachnocampa luminosa, is unique to New Zealand. Thousands of these tiny creatures radiate their unmistakable luminescent light as our expert guides provide informative commentary on the Caves' historical and geological significance. Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a must see for any traveller. Enjoy the world famous boat ride under thousands of magical glowworms and become a part of over 120 years of cultural and natural history. THE BOAT RIDE Marvel at Mother Nature's light display as you glide silently through the starry wonderland of the Glowworm Grotto. Meander underground along the Waitomo River and gaze in silence at the myriad of glow worm lights that make up the Glowworm Grotto. As you enter this galaxy of tiny living lights, you'll immediately experience a serene ambience and be fascinated and intrigued by tiny glowworms that light your way. RUAKURI CAVE Ruakuri Cave offers a captivating blend of Waitomo's most compelling subterranean experiences. Journey down through the spectacular spiral entrance, and marvel at the softly folding shawl-like limestone formations and crystal tapestries. Hear the distant thunder of the subterranean waterfalls and get up close to the glowworms. ARUANUI CAVE Aranui Cave is a magical, mystical place that is steeped in Maori myth and legend. Just inside the entrance is a colony of native New Zealand cave wetas and further into the cave is the most beautiful collection of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and decorative formations.

This was my first trip to the Glowworm caves and for me it is now a must see for anyone in the area or travelling around the North Island of New Zealand. We arrived the night before and were able to book into an early morning tour which was not too bus, which allowed a quiet and relaxing tour even... More

It's been over 40 years since my last visit to the Glowworm Caves and although the entrance has changed the cave and its magic hasn't. Great place to take kids for a look at the wonders of glowworms, value for money and just so beautiful to look at. Good commentary from staff - very educational and a credit to them... More

From start to finish my family and I loved the glow worm caves. The cost was relative and the guide was good value.

There are two parts to the Waitomo Glow Worm caves. One part of it is the caves formed in the mountainside over millennia of geological activity. The other part of it is the actual glow worms that you get to see in a totally dark, cool and deep cave. The first part is very average as there are better, larger... More

Really enjoyed the tour of the glowworm caves. They were very beautiful and a very rare experience. The only thing against the experience is the price; the basic tour is $50 each for a 45 minute tour which could easily be cheaper. But overall would recommend to others.

The Waitomo caves are probably one of the most visited attractions on the Northern Island of NZ. Very accessible as only a few hours drive from Auckland or Rotorua. This also provides the main downside of these caves: the crowds. Do not come here if you want an intimate experience, however it is still very interesting to learn about the... More

Everyone should see the magical, mystical Waitomo Glowworm Caves in New Zealand. These world renown caves offer a unique peek into an underground cave that not only has impressive lime formations, but visitors can witness something that is only seen in the darkness of a New Zealand cave: the twinkling glowworms that live there.Visitors can take a boat ride into... We went on a 2 hour cave walk with an excellent guide. We saw all kinds of formations & glow worms. The tour only had about 16 guests which was also nice. The cave had excellent lighting & walkways for people of multiple ages to get around! Worth the trip & bought the tickets an hour before at the "I"... More

That was my first time at the Waitomo glowworms caves and I must say it was worth it. We all loved it and it was very peaceful too. If you are in the Waikato, this is worth the detour.
