About
The only 17th-century plantation house in Barbados entirely open to the public. Built in 1660 by Matthew Chapman, the house transferred hands through many planters and families who historically relied on the production of sugarcane as its main economic activity, around eight separate families owned Sunbury. The original name of Sunbury was Chapman’s Plantation, and then changed to Branker’s Plantation. During the ownership of the Barrow brothers, the plantation adopted the name of “Brothers Plantation” to Sunbury Plantation, after their home in Britain.

    Charming Historical Mansion
Visiting this impressive historical plantation house was one of the highlights of my holiday on Barbados. It houses an impressive collection of beautiful furniture, antiques and artefacts from the bygone times of Barbados, that all give an overall idea of how influential people used to live in the past and how they managed great plantations. Grand reception rooms, dining saloon and a series of bedrooms upstairs allow the visitor to take a step back in time and there’s still more down in the basement. After all these visual attractions I enjoyed a glass of fruit punch included in the price of the admission ticket and bought a couple of souvenirs from the on-site gift shop. It truly was a very enjoyable half a day trip to this beautifully maintained property, considered one of the best in the Caribbean.

    Interesting house but rushed tour
Although a charming house with lots of interesting history our guide rushed us through and often said things like, there’s not much to see in this room. We could easily have spent a bit longer having each room explained to us more fully. Our guides knowledge was also limited and was unable to answer any questions past his normal script. However worth a visit if you are interested in Barbados history

    Worth visiting
Beautiful old plantation house full of antiques, with very knowledgeable and friendly guides. Interesting to hear the history of the house and plantation see how people lived. Very good value (entrance fee includes a rum punch!) with lovely gardens to sit and have a drink.

This was part of a Tui tour so as with most of them it was rushed. Building and contents were magnificent. Tour guide was informative. The only downside was that our group was too large for some of the rooms that half of us weren't inside the same room as the guide was giving her talk. The usual quick rum punch at the end then moved on. Still worth a visit for the education purposes alone. If you have the opportunity, do the site on your own.

Lovely old house and grounds. Shame it is not original but it has been beautifully put together. Nice rum or fruit punch. Quite a few steps so my sister couldn't see upstairs.

We stopped at Sunbury Plantation House as part of an excursion from our cruise ship.

There was an entertaining demonstration (and tasting) of making rum cocktails.

The tour around the house was interesting, but there were too many people as several coaches from our ship were all doing the same thing at the same time. It would have be easy to change the itinerary to avoid this, but whether that’s the fault of the cruise line excursion organisers or the Sunbury people I can’t say.

The subject of slavery was not completely avoided, but it was but no means a central theme, which might or might not bother you.

The obligatory complimentary glass of punch was offered at the end of the tour: without alcohol or with not very much alcohol.

Fantastic! My guide, Cal gave historical facts and personal insights, adjusting my tour to work around bus tours ensuring that I had a very personalized experience! The house is a treasure trove providing a window into Barbados’ rich history and culture! The rum punch at the end can be savored as you process all that you have seen!
