Don't miss this gem of a site
I reckon this is the best of all the attractions on the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard explorer ticket. First visit, we called after a visit to the submarine museum and joined a tour. Our guide was so knowledgeable and informative, we ran out of time to see the Night Hunters exhibit. Came back the following week and still managed to fill a couple of hours revisiting Explosion. If you have the Explorer ticket, make sure to make time to visit this site

    Brilliant place - recommended
A hidden gem amongst all the excellent exhibits at the National Naval Museum in Gosport and Portsmouth. The exhibits and staff are excellent, but special accolades to Gavin, who provided a most absorbing and interesting tour. This covered naval firepower, and the technology behind it, from canons to heat seeking missiles. Its only a short boat trip from the main dockyard at Portsmouth, and the transfer is included in the price of your ticket if you an Explorer or Ultimate Explorer ticket. Would love to come back and learn more about naval firepower in more detail if the museum ever put on special events on this topic. If you can, get yourself there when Gavin is providing the tour (we went on a Sunday afternoon) - well worth it. Top tip - buy the Ultimate Explorer ticket - well worth the extra that you pay for the ordinary Explorer ticket.

Explosion Museum of naval power 12.2.23
We visited this brilliant museum as part of our ultimate explorer ticket for the Portsmouth historic dockyard ticket. We got the water bus from the dockyard and we went on the guided tour with Gavin, very interesting and detailed. As we missed the 1.15 water bus we stayed till 3.15 and walked around on our own,so much to see! We even had time for a cream tea,why not!

    Great guided tour!
We are members of the historic dockyards of Portsmouth but never knew this was part of it. First of all, you go on a little boat ride to get to Gosport from Portsmouth. Once there, there is lots to see. We waited 5 minutes for a free guided tour as we thought it might be better for our 12 year old daughter rather than just walk around it. This was definitely the best option. Our tour guide, Gavin Mackay, a very passionate and knowledgeable man, took us round for 1 hour and answered any questions asked. 1 hour just wasn't enough and we actually felt that there could be some guided tours of 1 hour for each little section of the museum as there is so much to learn about. Could this be organised once a month maybe? It was a great introduction to the museum though and I would highly recommend the tour. Thank you Gavin!

    Don’t Miss the Guided Tour
Popped along to this by Water Taxi from the Naval Dockyards, and I’m so glad we did. The museum is a fantastic insight into Naval weaponry and our guide - Gavin - brought it all to life with a depth of knowledge and an enthusiasm that left us nothing less than enthralled. Well worth it. Don’t miss it!

    Educational and informative
This is a great addition to the historic dockyard in Portsmouth. It can be driven to or you can take the boat across from the dockyard and this is scheduled at set times. Unfortunately, some of the interactive displays weren’t available but there was still plenty to see and read about. We also visited the cafe that is located inside the main building and tea and coffee is reasonably priced and there is a small amount of food available also. Well worth a visit especially if you have the all inclusive ticket as part of the historic dockyard.

Go, if you like the history of things that explode
This was the second place to visit on our second day at the Historic Dockyard. Again, this is another interesting place to visit being the former munitions site. Plenty of stories from the past about the site and various interactive bits about munitions, guns, other things that explode and what fires them.

Fun, informative and would love to go back!
This hidden gem is really well worth a visit and I fear if more people don’t then it won’t be around for too many years more. There is so much to see from early cannons to modern day missiles, torpedoes, sea mines and nuclear weapons and much more! The tour we had from the magnificent Gavin was brilliant. He really knows his stuff and clearly cares about it all so deeply. Great for adults and kids alike.

Spent a few hours going are the site which has some vert good exhibits plus interactive touch screens to pass on more info, also included in the price of our ticket was the water taxi to the Navel site ( taxi is seasonal ) spent a few hours there as well looking at the departure of 1 of the trough deck carriers. But like I said the highlight of the visit was Heidi with her beaming smile and friendliness'. will look forward to return back there sometime soon.

    Expensivly Lacking Detail
I went with high expectations but was disappointed. Firstly, the pricing structure. The cheapest ticket we could buy was an Adult Attraction Day pass for £34 each. While this enttled us to visit the other two Naval Museum sites in the area, it was very expensive if limited for time. Secondly, this site is about 20 minutes walk north from the Gosport ferry terminal. The submarine museum is 20 minutes walk south of the ferry terminal. So, to see both of the Gosport sites is a minimum of 60 minutes walking if you dont have transport. There is a river bus that travels between the sites, but our ticket did not give us access, and we could not buy separate tickets. So we were forced to walk or get a road bus. Lastly, the museum otself has some nice exhibits, but a lot of the interactive exhibits were broken or just didnt work. Also, there was very little detail about the exhibits and, in some cases, none at all. This left us frustrated and underwhealmed. If we had paid £34 just for this site, this would have been a 2 star review.

Well laid out museum, covering a wide section of history. From the people that worked there, to the history of naval weapons. Highly recommend the guided tour, gavin was interesting and very knowledgeable.

Just had a great time at this museum, again I was greated like an old friend by the wonderful Heidi who also greated my parents with the same welcoming smile she show unto me . My dad had his mobilty scooter and found the museum was well thought out with wide corridoors and rooms and access to exhibts , the only downside to todays visit was we were unable to see the night raiders exhibtion this was due to saff shortages (weather ) the 2nd problem was the noise that was generated via the interactive exhbit ( how many rounds can you load in 1 minute) this was near a tv presentation explaining how gun crews work, we tried to listen to what was being said but had to give up ( It might be an idea if that exhibt could be resited else where in the hall or plastic blocks use to reduce noise ). Both parents has a great time looking and reading about all the exhibts. Again a vvvvvery big thank you Heidi for the most warmest of elcome you gave my parents. looking forward to seeing u and the rest of staff in furture visist.

Really interesting to learn about the history of the site.

Find the mouse trail to keep the kids entertained although you may need help to find the one in the big gun room!!! Visited with 10, 8 and 4yr old.

Enthusiastic staff.

Sadly the watertaxi/boat doesn't run from Portsmouth during the off season on the weekday (possibly not at weekends either) so you will need to drive around to Gosport to see this. Free car parking and cafe onsite.

Fantastic and informative. You should give enough time (at least half a day) to give it the justice it deserves…. It’s undersold by Portsmouth Historic Dockyard who should encourage it as a visit on its own merits….thank you Gavin and all other volunteers.

I visited this museum many years ago, not long after it first opened and thought a return visit was overdue. Imagine my shock when we arrived and were faced with a minimum entry price of GBP34 per person!!! No discount for students either. This is completely out of step with other local museums and is completely unjustified. Maybe the management / board of NMRN think this is good value, but it is completely out of reach of most ordinary people, especially at the moment. We left and went to the much more affordable D-Day museum instead. I fear that Explosion's days may be numbered if it continues to price itself out of the market.
