The museum was worth every bit the €4/person entry fee! Well-kept and well-organised, it showcased the rich heritage of the Jewish community in Belmonte and the surroundings. We went in without a clue and came out much enlightened! The fact that the Jewish community still exists in Belmonte and can practise their faith openly is testimony to the harmonious co-existence between the different faiths here. An hour here is easily spent.

Very interesting and enlightening. Highly recommended.

We planned a trip in Portugal around coming to Belmonte, the Museum, the synagogue. The most powerful part of the museum was the video stories for generations. Talking about the family history. The history of secrecy. The history of values passed from generation to generation over 500 years.

We went with no special expectations, and were pleasantly surprised to learn quite a few things about the crypto-Jews of Belmonte. Highly recommended

its always a very special emotion for me to visit Belmonte, apart that the museum, shows details of the members of the community nowadays and what they went through the years till the community reopened publicly some 30 odd years ago.

Very nice museum well organised with a nice collection of artefacts of the Jews who take refuge there after being persecuted by the Catholic Inquisition.

The story of the Jewish community of Belmonte, the Crypto-Jews is unbelievable. Forced to convert to Christianity, this small community kept their traditional practices alive over four centuries!

We were booked for an overnight stay in Belmonte with plans to explore the nearby mountains. It was a surprise to discover a community of Jews who had taken refuge and gone into hiding for 500 years. The story of their coming out just thirty years ago, well told in this small museum is astounding. English signage is good.
