From a distance it looks a decent castle but up close it disappoints. Driving following satnav you drive through the castle main gate without really realising you have entered the castle itself. There is then rough gravel ground in many places for random parking. The grounds were overgrown but nothing a little work wouldn’t improve. But apart from good views in all directions from the walls there is nothing to see. The large church in the centre, with a promising description of originally 13c with modifications over the centuries was locked.

Located on a hill is the Arraiolos Castle, with some parts of the structure and the walls still standing. It’s an easy hike from the Center if you like to get your heart rate slightly up, or you can just drive up where there’s parking. In the middle of the property is an old church which we couldn’t enter.

The best part of visiting this place is being able to get the beautiful views of the town itself and the valleys. And I loved the fact that there were so many butterflies at that time.

Mesmerising views of the countryside, town and beyond, definitely worth a walk or drive up for that. If you can catch it at sunset the views are spectacular.

We had come to Arraiolos for a stay at the Pousada plus a wine tasting session at Ravasqueira, and decided to try the best restaurant in town (O Alpendre) and get a feel for the local made carpets (we ended up buying one in the first and only shop we visited).
But the castle and dominating church overlooking this quaint village was a total surprise.

We were expecting more. It felt that it was abandoned. You cant't visit the Church. The sight is the only positive note.

This castle is a reference of the battlement defences of the moors, and the walls are still standing

We visited Arraiolos with the intention of purchasing a handmade carpet. Upon arrival we saw a castle on the hill that was very different from the others in the area in that its wall is a smooth circle. It is in a run down state but still impressive and a nice entrance to the blue and white buildings of the town. Very quiet town in the wintertime. I hope to return during the summer some day. I did get my rug though!

We visited another of the great castles in the Iberian peninsular last month - this one on the edge of Evora, and town that is very popular with visitors. However, to get away from some of the tourism of Evora - which is a worthy place to visit, then short trips out to the great castes at Evramonte and here to Arraiolos are stringly recommended. We got there later in the day and were the only people walking around the himpressive walls which sit atop a mound close to the white-washed town. In the centre of the extensive circular walls sits a church - unfortunately locked when we were there. But there was enough of interest in the crumbling fortifications and the entry gates to keep one's intrest. Plus the solitude after the busy streets of Evora will come as a welcome relief if you like castles especially!

Very interesting to walk up to the castle inside its walls. Plenty of wild flowers, peaceful and amazing views over all the surrounding countryside. The small town of Arraiolos is also worth wandering around. The painting on the Church wall of the dye vats sets the scene for a visit to the small museum to learn the history of the town and the art of rug making. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit here.

This castle isn’t hugely impressive but still worth the visit. When you see Arraiolos and its caste when you’re approaching the town that’s really a beautiful sight. We visited it like the Portuguese do ; yep we drove straight to the top into the castle. We spent 20 minutes over there walking the castle walls and enjoying the view. Entrance is free so if you pass by the town of Arraiolos it’s something you might consider visiting.
