In the tourist info shop in Locorotondo, we bought a book called "Discover Valle d'Itria" by M.T. Aquaviva. It guided us out into the countryside, to visit the " contradas," the tiny farming villages of trullis found in the Valle d'Itria. Basically, what you do is turn off the main routes between Locorotondo and Cisterno (no doubt, between other towns, too), park your car in a wide spot of the road and get out & take a walk. It is a really great way to see how farm families live and to see trullis which are used for living, not for tourists' photos. We also found (not from the book, just wandering around) a public bike/jogging trail which runs between several of the towns; you'll have to ask locals how to get there; I couldn't possibly describe it, but if you do, you'll be rewarded with a really great place to walk and see all that the countryside has to offer...trullis, vineyards, wild flowers, and more. Be sure to take your camera...these were some of our best shots of our trip...way better than Alberobello shots! I'd suggest that you allow at least two hours: half an hour to find where you want to walk and an hour or two (or more if you wish) to walk.

Lovely area in Puglia. Martina Franca old town is a delight. We stayed in the centre and loved it. We walked to Locorotunda one day (only 6K) which was well worth a visit, again a lovely old town, and got the train back. Alberobella with its delightful trullis was only 10 mins on the train. Be warned however - nearly all stations in this area are a long haul to the town - always uphill! (Main tip if travelling by train - travel as light as you can!).

The Ferrovie del Sud Est covers most of the Valle d'Itria with Martina Franca the junction between the Lecce line and the Bari line. Yet hardly any tourists - or indeed Italians - use it. But it's very convenient for Noci, Alberobello, Locorotondo and Martina Franca. The walk up the hill to the centre of Martina Franca may prove difficult for some but then so is parking.
Most of the trains are now modern air-conditioned Polish diesel units but there are still a few rattletraps around, which adds to the fun. Also there is hardly ever a station announcement so you have to ask the train conductor to tell you when to get off. Timing is generally good but you never know until the last minute which platform to use.

Anyone who loves Italy and hasn't visited Valle d'Itria it is a must, it won't disappoint. The area has everything - great restaurants whatever your budget, an impressive coastline, lovely inland towns ousing with history and amazing architecture.

We so enjoyed our drives in this area. The views in May were green for as far as the eye could see. Also, the drivers are fairly courteous (unlike Sicily!).

We spend 3 days in the valle. Find a good masseria to stay and do daily trips to the many and pretty villages around. Great way to discover Puglia, its fantastic food and welcoming locals.

This area ranging between Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Alberobello and Cisternino is home to the 'trulli', these white painted conical roofed homes once the dwelling places of farmers and their stock are now becoming holiday homes for wealthy Italians and foreigners. The Valle d'Itria is a fertile area home to the white wines of Locorotondo and Martina Franca and vineyards are common. When visiting the local markets much of the produce is grown in the Valle d'Itria. The land that is not in production tends to be rocky with limestone outcrops (not generally particularly photogenic - but there are some gems to find). It's worth parking the car taking the camera and going for a walk to find those special places particularly in spring with the orchids and early f.

We found wine tasting at Locorotondo, food at Alberobello, and vineyards galore. A lovely area to eat if you can get it freshly prepared. Be warned that some of the region has Italian type fast food like pasta that is pre made and then microwaved. Yuk!

Ciao a tutti ad Agosto sarò in vacanza a Polignano. Avevamo intenzione di noleggiare uno scooter per visitare le località limitrofe. La mia intenzione era di visitare la Valle d’Itria: Alberobello, Martina F, Cisternino, Locorotondo ed Ostuni. In un unico giorno si riesce a visitare alberobello, Martina F, Locorotondo e cenare a Cisternino? E in un secondo giorno invece andare ad Ostuni in modo da poter fare anche metà giornata di mare. Grazie a chi risponderà !

Ciao, se le vuoi vedere di corsa, ce la fai (tieni conto che sarà agosto, quindi Alberobello soprattutto sarà un bel caos.), ma non lo consiglio. Io metterei in preventivo un paio di giorni.

Salve , io consiglierei di contattare la Pro Loco di Martina Franca (dati su internet). La Valle d'idria è molto bella Martina Franca è il comune più grande e offre buone strutture ricettive, Poichè vi trattenete per un buon periodo la posizione permette di raggiungere tante località stupende del salento. Io ci vado 2 volte all'anno da 30 anni.
