About
Come and discover the first private home to open its doors to the public in 1922. You will appreciate the splendour and delight of real life in a castle. The owners invite you to discover this fantastic and vivid heritage: from the botanical park to the magnificent interior of the Château; the hunting dog kennels to Tintin's exhibition and the gardens through to the forest. The Château displays a wonderful range of furniture and interior decoration, all of which are remarkably well preserved. The private apartments on the first floor convey the French ‘art de vivre’ Many treasures can be found at Cheverny like a 17th century Gobelin tapestry for example, on display in the Arms room or the Louis XIV chest of drawers in the Boulle style. And you may even spend the night in one of our modern flats with top of the range furniture !

Much more than just another castle
There are tons of chateau throughout the Loire Valley, but Cheverny feels the most like a real family home. The grounds are always dressed for the season and offer lots of room for kids to run. The statues offer a touch of art to explore and kids will also love the hedge maze. Inside the castle, you get the feel for the history of the family as well as the buildings place in French history. It feels surprisingly cozy despite being a huge castle. There were also tons of Lego builds set up when we were there from a miniature of the castle to reproductions of famous works of art. Be sure the check out the dog kennels before you head out!

    Professionally Managed
Among the castles of Loire Valley, this one was the most professionally managed one. When we were there Easter ornaments were still in place and that added a nice touch to our visit. Inside the castle, there is little to be seen. It's rather the gardens that are worth visiting. The pond inside, the sculptures around, hundreds of years old linden tree are all very impressive. The castle souvenir shop is also the best among castle shops. As we were in Loire Valley out of tourism season, we did not wait in any queues except for here: we had to wait around 30 minutes to get inside.

Enjoyed it but where were the guide books
I had visited before so knew what to expect. I really enjoyed the interior, it was better than I had remembered. The gardens were good but the tulips had finished. We looked at the fruit trees etc and visited the dogs. Had some lovely ice cream in the orangerie. Bought several small items in the shop but was unable to buy a guide book. The cheapest book was £35 in French.

    A very nice little palace.
Fully furnished and well displayed rooms that gave a complete impression of the entire palace. Movement in the palace was very well organized, which made it impossible to miss anything. Nice park and garden. We visited eight famous palaces on this trip to France, and this was the smallest of them all, but the best in condition and the best maintained. In the building in the garden there is a quite decent restaurant.

We forgot two valuable umbrellas in the Orangerie yesterday and remembered when we reached the exit door of the Boutique. It was 15min to closing but the staff wouldn't let us back to collect them. They told us to return the next morning. They knew full well that visitors in the Loire Valley go around the châteaux and don't remain in one place. They were unhelpful and unpleasant. We tried to call them today to arrange for later collection. The 02 54 79 96 29 line does not answer or let callers leave a message. It just said "no one is avaliable, call later". This château stands in starck contrast with the other châteaux we have visited along the Loire on this trip.

Extremely Irritating if You Want to See the Tapestries. There is plexiglass over the tapestries and lighting in exactly the wrong places, so you see mostly glare. Problem could be easily solved with ceiling lights. Simple negligence.

Cheverny is a more recent chateau. It is still inhabited. This makes it unusual to visit. Some parts are more modern and have a less historical feeling. Some parts have smaller corridors and they were overcrowded even on January 2nd visit...tourists were in a solid line and you had to move with the line, in some parts; in other parts it was more free flowing and more enjoyable. The main draw is the hunting dogs. I would suggest the main floor of chateau is interesting, upper floors are smaller and modern and crowded and of little interest (could skip), and leave yourself some time to go watch the dogs for at least 10 minutes. The chateau was part of our organized Loire trip that also included Chambord and Chenonceau (BOTH much more interesting than Cheverny), otherwise we would not have come. Honestly the drive from the other chateaux over to Cheverny was worth doing because it gives more views of Loire valley and other smaller chateaux, but the Cheverny itself is sort of the low light of this trip.

We have visited several chateaus while biking around the area and this is one of the nicest and best preserved castles we have seen.

Very nice paintings on walls, ceiling, much furniture to look at.

The family living there has owned the castle for 600 years and they have about 70!!! dogs which they use for hunting. We watched the dog trainer feed the dogs. Never ever seen that many dogs at once. Impressive!

We bought our tickets at the entrance here as it wasn’t very crowded. The brochure has really good explanations.
The inside is very well maintained with elaborately decorated rooms.
The hounds were fund to see as well, They aren’t currently offering the “feeding of the hounds” for people to see.

The gardens weren’t nearly as elaborate as some of the other chateax, but the inside of the chateau is definitely worth it.

Our visit was outside of the main season, so there were not that many visitors. However, we were waiting in line for the entire visit except for during our stroll through the parc. A 1.5 hour stay lasted in the end more than 3 hours.
Furthermore, probably to make the castle more interesting there were many plastic lego things, although less would have been more authentic.
Also the restaurants on the property are the worst service we've seen in a very long time. Orangerie: service personnel is very inattentive to customers, very unorganised and slow. The restaurant at the entrance: the same, plus bad hygiene.
Sadly, we cannot recommend this castle. There are many better options in this region to see and spend some time.

It is a small town with an excelent castle. You can not book tickets online or in advance. You have to wait in line few moments to get your tickets. You are given a flyer with all information on the Castle Rooms in your language. Parking is very easy and free of charge. As the weather is very hot they have springlers with humidity for refresh outside. Inside the Castle tour is very organized and the decor absolutily vivid. It is lovely. The park outside is generous and refreshing. We loved the quiet shadow near the lake. You have plenty of time to enjoy the gardens. There is a picnic area with shadows. One of the best Castles in Loire. It is worth a visit and we all should consider not visiting those biggest and famous ones crowed, expensive and offering a bellow average experience. This one you can not miss. To upgrade the visit you can explore the forest or visit with kids the Timtim exhibition in the garden.

Home is filled with bunny / cat / Easter egg figurines, juxtaposed with historical art and furnishings. I found them distracting and made me sorry I’d overpaid for the ticket. Grounds are nice enough. Liked the Remarkable Trees. The hunting dogs looked kinda miserable.

The Cheverny Chateau is located some 30 min drive southeast of Blois, so it makes a great half day excursion.
It is not the best one we saw on our 3 days Loire valley tour, but it was a memorable visit.
The Chateau itself is nice, grand and splendid like most of them. During the tour you visit both floors. It was the first Chateau that was open to public and there's a movie of receiving foreign heads of states there.
The gardens are nice, with fountains and ponds along with some sculptures, but far from the Villandry gardens.
The Tintin exhibition was an added bonus as this Chateau served as an inspiration.
Best we liked the Chateau kennel housing around 120 French tricolor dogs - very interesting to see them in such a number.
