- Raymond HWest Wickham, United Kingdom231 contributionsAn architectural gemA 10 minute walk down a track through woodland from the road to the trackside to see this spectacular and correctly named nice arches bridge. The bridge is a seriously impressive piece of architecture and engineering. We were fortunate to be there when a late train crossed the bridge. Not sure if more photos are taken by tourists on the train or at trackside! An enjoyable activityVisited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 October 2023
- Seline N15 contributionsFinal destinations in Sri Lanka a country of beauty and tranquillity.Missed the train within seconds while climbing up. The road to Seven Arches is really bad soil and stones. There's a breakfast area located near the train tracks. Plenty of tuk tuk to hire your way back. My tuk tuk dropped and waited. Everything's extremely expensive this year. Yup, you heard me right 3 to 4 times more expensive than last year. The structure of bridge and track are just awesome it's been there for more than 100 years and still going strong. The arches of the bridge are incredibly created by Sri Lankan architectural engineers. A beautiful scenery covers the whole area, and the weather is cold and relaxing. Minus getting here, it's beautiful, and there is no entry fee. Walking on the railway tracks gives goosebumps. Happy Holidays.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 28 October 2023
- HRNew Delhi, India396 contributionsTrain on the HillsThe bridge of nine arches reminds one of the colonial style of construction. The train chugging amidst the lush green hills makes it is a worthwhile sight. While there are Tuk Tuks which take you there, the walk (if one chooses so) is about half a kilometer of a hilly path.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 November 2023
- jeff1955malaysiaKuala Lumpur, Malaysia5,983 contributionsScenic BridgeThe Scenic Nine Arch Bridge is between Ella and Demodara station at Gotuwala. The unique part is that this bridge it is built entirely from rocks, bricks, and cement without any use of steel or metals throughout the structure. Very picturesque spot.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 16 November 2023
- Matthew PBrighton and Hove, United Kingdom844 contributionsA Railway Bridge Over a Tropical GorgeInteresting structure in the middle of nowhere that appears to have somehow attained some kind of "Cult" status. That said it's a fantastic looking structure a short 20 minute walk from the nearest bus / Tuk Tuk stop although most Tuk Tuk drivers will happily go the extra mile down a dirt track that connects almost directly with the bridge. Unless you aren't able to manage the walk, I suggest you go for it as it's really easy, not steep or slippery, and the feeling of satisfaction is worth every step. Look out for the bee's nests under a couple of the arches, really quite large and amazing to behold.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 November 2023
- Sherry UVictoria, Canada127 contributionsLoved seeing this historic iconic bridge. This was fabulous. I was actually nervous to go because of all the warnings and incidents of bee attacks. I am glad I went there were not many tourists and not a bee to be seen. I also timed it right to watch the train go over the bridge.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 14 December 2023
- seema60Toronto, Canada1,001 contributionsBeautiful old railway bridgeI was dropped off at one end of the walk to the bridge. Unfortunately after walking up and down along a concrete road I wasn’t able to climb down the last 50 feet due to slippery red path. So I turned around and went on the left side of the bridge. That was an easy walk in the jungle and some steps leading down to the bridge. I got some lovely shots from both sides. The bridge itself is packed with tourists and some cafes. There are also tuk tuks which can reach there. I waited for half hour and unfortunately the train arrived just as I had left. But it’s a beautiful bridge and viewpoint worth a visit.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 January 2024
- SophieLondon, United Kingdom62 contributionsNice view and recommend watching the trains pass over from a nearby restaurantEnjoyed our visit to 9 Arch Bridge after our walk up Little Adam’s Peak. The bridge itself is beautiful and we enjoyed a breakfast overlooking the bridge itself, which meant we saw 2 trains pass over and managed to get some fab pictures from this vantage point. We then scrambled down (and yes it was a scramble) down a steep clay path to get to the bridge itself. Now I think we must have gone a slightly unofficial route as we were COVERED in clay from the recent rainfall and a total mess compared to everyone else! Was a tad scary at one point with a sheer drop which would have landed us on top of someone’s house - but we made it. On the bridge itself it was quite busy so we didn’t stay for too long, but was a cool experience. We got a TukTuk back to Ella town centre which we paid a fair amount for (~1700 rupees), and afterwards realised if we had gone the other way it would have been a relatively easy 25 minute walk, but we didn’t fancy it seeing as we were covered in clay! Overall, a nice morning visit whilst staying in Ella, and a great spot for pictures. Would recommend grabbing breakfast overlooking the viaduct to be able to enjoy the visit fully.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 January 2024
- Explore Sri LankaGalle, Sri Lanka106 contributionsWonderful PlaceWe parked our van in the vehicle park situated on Ella - Passara road and had a walk for nearly 20 minutes to the nine-arch bridge. The walkway was through the jungle. There are several walkways connecting from Eastern and the Western ends of the bridge. Ours was the western end. That means when we were reaching the bridge, that railway tunnel was on our left-hand side.Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 January 2024
- CHD6265Odiham, United Kingdom464 contributionsAnother free to do attraction but normally very busyIncredible piece of civil engineering that is worth travelling to and over by train but also separately walking to and viewing from different vantage points. Our tuk tuk driver to took us to an off-piste ‘cafe’ (a lady’s terrace - see pic) with the most incredible view to enjoy with a homemade coconut and lemon juice drink. Reaching the area is challenging but absolutely worth the experience. We hired two 'Tuks' after parking our vehicle in a private car park nearby. The old bridge is a masterpiece of construction, which continues to serve several important trains plying the scenic main railway line between Colombo and Badulla.
A word of caution to those visiting the bridge. Several wasp hives are located under the arches and particularly the younger generation tends to be loud when visiting the area. this can be very dangerous as it is an open area without any protection to take cover in case of an attack. Please exercise due caution.

This bridge is a masterpiece of the Victorian era - a beautiful piece of engineering in a deep green valley. It forms part the the Badulla branch of what must be one of the most characterful railways in the world.
Unfortunately it has risen to fame by social media and, as a visitor attraction, is now a circus.
At any time of day there are loads of people there ( I am ashamed to say I have added to the crowd by visiting).
Rough paths lead to it from all directions and areas have been worn away at each end.
If you're going to try to get "the picture" forget it - there will always be people there in the way.
To see something of the charm of the railway you could try going to the unique Demodara station which is up the line

As others said it’s a nice experience. For hikers and adventures people I recommend going through Ella. For people who just want to enjoy the view or unable to climb/walk recommend going through Badulla side or go to Ella railway station and walk to the site. Better carry some water as there are very few shops along the way.

We walked along the tracks from Tea Cabins, where we were staying. The tracks were empty and silent, but as we approached the bridge there were a lot of people. We sat with a coconut waiting for the train to cross at approx 1130-12pm. Hearing it in the distance then seeing it cross the bridge was well worth the trip

My first visit to Nine Arch Bridge was way back in 1988 as a teenager and i've been there many times over since then. I suggest any visitor should read up on its history a bit before a visit there as you could appreciate the place better knowing how it came to be. Take a locomotive train ride from Ella station to Uduwara or Badulla (the end of the up country track) passing the Demodara Loop. Demodara is supposedly the only station in the world that sits right on top of the tunnel the train passes. Of course the scenery you enjoy during the ride is simple awesome. You would possibly not get what Ella and the surroundings have to offer - within such a close proximity - any place else

One of the most visited places in Ella, the nine arc bridge is very Picturesque and surely the best attraction to visit. The place is accessible from various locations and all of it offer a great view of the bridge. The place requires some hiking. We went on to walk a mile or so before we came across a viewing point that offered this lovely view of the bridge. Be prepared to face a bunch of tourists trying various poses on the railway track.

We walked along the "most direct" walking trail to the bridge and arrived at 5:30 pm...hoping to see the 5:30 train come through. No train by 6:10 pm so we walked back out. In the meantime, we took heaps of lovely photos, walked on the train tracks and enjoyed the people watching.....local and not so local. One gentleman calmly walked his 2 cows over the bridge amidst all the tourists!

To round off our train adventure starting off at The Fort, Colombo stopping off at Kandy and Ella, We took a trip to the nine arch bridge organised by our homestay owner.
Instead of dropping us at the main start point near the Flower Garden Hotel, our tuk tuk driver took us further round and down some lanes and dropped us off at the top of some safe concrete steps which led down to the railway track. We followed the track for about 100metres to the bridge.
This saved us a lot of time as the zigzag route down through the woods was very busy.
I got some brilliant pictures of my train mad hubby. We were pleased however that we had already completed our train journey before we got a close look at the tracks!

You can start from Ella station if you don't mind walking along the tracks for about 30 minutes, or walk from Pessara road and look for the sign on the left that says 'quickest route to Nine Arch Bridge', or similar. I preferred this forest route to stepping on railway sleepers. I was surprised to see hundreds of people there, though I shouldn't have been. I'd recommend timing your visit to coincide with a train (see photo for timetable) though the train I saw was half an hour late. Ideally go early morning when it will be less busy and not so hot while you're waiting for the train. If you just want to get your selfie, as most people do, then it's fine to go any time. If you're there in the middle of the day just find some shade and sip on a king coconut juice.

Just as u get down from Little Adams Peak n reach d road, ull find a sign for Nine Arches Bridge. A half hour walk through narrow paths in d woods will lead u to d view point of d bridge. We reached here by 11.45 am n watched d train pass at 11.50. It was amazing. After that walk down to the track/tunnel area. There’s a small cafe. Have some tea, loiter around d track till d next train arrives. Lucky for us d next one was just an hour away. This time we watched it up close. U get some really amazing captures here. I would suggest dont miss it. Im attaching d train timetable for ur information. I absolutely loved this experience.

Buongiorno.
Quanto tempo si ferma il treno ad ogni stazione?
Ogni quanto passano i treni?
Si può scendere e poi risalire su un altro treno?
Grazie.

Thinking about holiday in Sri Lanka, where we are going with two children I would like to ask if it is necessary to travel with travel agency (with think it could be too demanding for children to see all places planned by travel agency, also it is more expensive) Is it easily possible to get to such a places like 9 arch bridge or elephant orphanage, some tea plantation, or other sightseeing by train / rent a car ? Is it safe and easy to travel by train? What about roads and traffic signs? Also what about beaches? Is it safe to find some lonely, not crowded beach? Thank you very much
Written 3 November 2017
Yes you can make reservations at some hotels at Pinnawala where the Elephant Orphanage in your first night after arriving to Sri Lanka. Then you can get a train to Ella, where the nine arch bridge, Tea Plantation and climbing to the Little Adam's Peak and stay one night at Ella. From Ella to beach side in Hikkaduwa or Unawatuna just by a taxi it is 3 hours. from beach to Air port another 2 hours on next day
Train is safe in Sri Lanka and if you need you can get a taxi arranged by us to pick you from Airport

I want to see this place but my family includes kids with ages 4, and 7. Do we need to hike to see this place ?
Written 1 February 2017
No need to hike. The easiest and fastest way to reach there as follows.
Take a van and travel towards to "Haliela" (On Badulla main road) and there is a Sign board with 9 arch bridge on your right side. Take that road you can reach very close to the location. There are car park you can park your vehicles and 5 minutes walk from there. If you are lucky, you can hire TUK TUK from car park, there a no walking at all to the bridge.

Hi there. Could you tell me please if the track would be easily traversed by scooter? We are travelling by scooter around the island
Thanks

Hi, what I would recommend is to take your scooter up to the Newburgh green tea factory in town. just slightly after it take a left turn off the main road, then stay left at the fork and drive down as far as yiu can go and walk from there. it's a steep road but nothing you can't manage. there are a few simple cafes on the way that will show you walking trails less than 5 min walk to the bridge.
