The Hindus believes that a holy bath into the sacred water of the Ganga removes all sins and hence Devotees always takes dip in holy rivers and Ghats which are constructed either side of the river. Major and famous ghats in Haridwar are Har Ki Pauri, Narayani Ghat, Kushavarta Ghat, Ram Ghat, Brahma Kund, Birla Ghat, Gau Ghat, Vishnu Ghat and VIP Ghat.
Gau Ghat is also one of the famous ghat of Haridwar which is located just walkable distance from Vishnu Ghat which is 2km away from Haridwar Railway station.
I have witnessed Ganga Aarti twice as of now. First time I had witnessed the same from Hari Ka Pauri and during the latest visit I have visited Ganga aarti from Gau Ghat.
Interesting Facts about Gau Ghat:
1. Gau means Cow. As per the Hinduism cow is like mother. This ghat is used to get rid of cow killing sins. Killing Cow is similar sin to the sin of killing Brahmin. Devotees visit this Ghat to cleanse themselves of this sin.
2. As per Hindu Mythology Cows are symbol of purity. By keeping same in mind devottess offers prayers and feed cows at Gau Ghat, believing that doing so will bring them blessings and good fortune.
3. This Ghat is also visited by those who want to offer solace to the demised family members. People come to this place to pray for the peace of their loved ones soul. Ashes of Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi were blown at this ghat which is situated opposite side of the Hari Ki Pauri.

In Haridwar, there's an overbridge at Har Ki Pauri that connects two sides of the Ganges. One side of the bridge is Har Ki Pauri, and the other side is Gau Ghat. Gau Ghat is a less crowded spot where you can also take a holy dip in the river.
Gau Ghat holds particular significance because of the many small huts aligned near the ghat, where pandits (Hindu priests) sit with ancient books called pothis. These pandits maintain detailed records of family histories. If you are from North India, it's quite possible to trace your family tree through these records.

One of the less popular ghats. You will find lot of street foods. There are number of homeless , sadhus you will find waiting here. There are small eateries where you can pay Rs. 100 to feed 5 such poor. They will feed two rotis, dal and halwa to each. You must do this I am sure you will feel happy seeing them happy eating food. There are lot of shops as well to buy local woollens and brass utensils. There is a foot bridge over the river Ganga here and the view of Har ki Pauri from this bridge is amazing. Must visit.

The ghat is very much crowded in day time due to commercial activities by the local vendors which should be avoided by the authority.
But if you sit there in early morning then you can enjoy the cool breezes of the river and the singing sound of the Holy river Ganga.

People come here to bathe to wash their sins, but leave the place very dirty . There are some inexpensive food stalls around and they also contribute to keep the place dirty .

This place is nothing but one of the many ghats in Haridwar. Maintenance of this ghat needs attention of the administration. Lot many shops are located on the side of this place.

This ghat is located at the walking distance from the Har Ki Paudi. The spiritual significance of this place is that the ashes of the departed soul is put into river Ganga from this point. One has to take care of the priests as they can ask for unjustified amount for the pooja

Gau Ghat is among the many holy/sacred places in Haridwar. It is also like other ghats & the only difference is that it is less crowded as compared to other places.

The main thing I found interesting was watching the guys jumping in to the fast flowing Ganges and trying to swim back to the banks before they got swept down too far!
Obviously it has real significance for others of faith also. Worth checking out as you stroll past.

Namaste.
I would be staying at Ganga Lahri in winter 2018 say October end.
1) I want to know that can I swim to the center of the Gangaji.I read that they have installed chains to the bridge.
2) How deep is water.
3) Is it clean to swim.
