About
Har Ki Pauri Haridwar : Haridwar is one of the most ancient pilgrimage centers in India that has been reverence from times immemorial. Hari means (Lord/God) and Dwar means Gateway. Hence Haridwar means Gateway to the Lord. According to the India mythology, it is one of the four places where drops of elixir, Amrita accidentally spilled over from the pitcher or Kumbha, in which it was being carried away by the celestial bird Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. These four spots have today become places where the Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 12 years in succession - Nasik, Ujjain, Haridwar and Allahabad. Millions of devotees and tourist congregate from all over the world to celebrate this celestial event and perform ritualistic bathing on the banks of the river Ganges.

KAR KI PAURI - Hindu Religious Bathing Area
This is the main bathing area in Haridwar.  Depending =on when you go it can be heaving. We went this time in Sept 2023 and it wasn’t that bad.  We took turns to bathe and look after each other cloths. The water generally is very cold, but it less so in Sep. Nov to Feb its freezing.  Don’t believe anyone that tells you the water is dirty or unclean.  The reality is the strength of the ganga determines things.  If you go in Jan to Mar its clear… less so in other months. Enjoy the spiritual experience. The river will draw you to it.  There are numerous priests who sit at Har ki Pauri who will perform puja, etc for you. Don’t allow them then to force you into doing anything g… You want to do a simple ganga puja and you have do determine to feed to 10, 20… 1000 pandits. I generally give then a few hundred rupees. It a spiritual experience please do make the effort.   The other thing you should do is attend and listen to the evening Aarti at Har Ki Pauri. There is also one that take place in Rishikesh. The evening aarti is at 5:30 PM in winter and 06:30PM in summer.  The best place to watch it is from the bathing area opposite Hari Pauri.  A word of warning peoples start gather 2-hrs before the start time of the aarti. However, its well worth attending and seeing and listening to the whole thing. There is also a morning aarti at 5:30 am in summer and 6:30 am in winter.  These tend to be less well attending because of the temperature early morning

A visit to Har ki pauri
Great place to visit and enjoy the views of river Ganga. Safe to take a dip in the river with many barriers and chains to hold on to. Easy to reach from Dehradun. However, be prepared to face crowds. Place needs some upkeep. Needs cleaning of walkways and stairs.

What a place to have holy bath! Har Ki Pauri is the most sacred Ganges ghat in India. It is one of the most sacred and pious place for Hindus to perform religious acts. The holy river Ganga descends from the hills to the plains here. The cold swift flow of water here makes bathing unforgettable. Once you take a dip in holy water, devotees’ loves to bath for longer time. There are several small Ganga Maa temples on the banks. Pundits sit here in small huts to facilitate devotees to perform Pujas and also keep their belongings while they bath. Aarti in the evening is the best activity held at Har Ki Pauri daily. People arrive to watch Aarti several hours before start to get a close view by sitting near to the place. All devotees who comes to Haridwar comes here without fail.

We reached Har Ki Pauri around 5:30pm to join the eventing Ganga Aarti. The evening Aarti time at Har Ki Pauri was 6:30pm. This time we were on other side of Har Ki Pauri for a better view of the Aarti. It was crowded, as people were sitting on the banks, so we have to sit behind. Ganga Aarti was well visible from this side. We have a holy bath in cold water of Ganges before Aarti and have Tilak on the forehead. It is believed a hold dip in Ganga clears all sins of yours. So, Har Ki Pauri is believed to be a big religious place for Sanatan Dharam followers.

Ganga aarti at Bank of Ganga river Was a long awaited exp for my family . It is performed these days at 6 PM to 7 PM on the bank of Ganga river at hardwar .
I had 84 years aged mother , but I managed to get her at the ghat .
Rickshaws leave you through a ramp bridge almost near ghar from where you can take some stairs and come to ghat oppsite aarti ghat to have best view.
Ghats are cleaned by dedicated staff by a committee at the ghat .
People start gathering earlier to get seats on the ghat stairs .
Aarti is performed by many priests with huge aarta handles with illuminated arti with very high sounds of SHANKH and temple ghantis .
We feel like coming to view this off and on .
Jai maa gange

Har Ki Pauri is a ghat on the ganga river in the heart of haridwar. King Vikramaditya is said to have built it in 1st century BC in the memory of his brother, Bharthari who had come to meditate here on the bank of the Ganges. It is believed that this is the spot were amrit fell during sagar manthan.

While the ghat is also used for pitra puja and asthi visarjan, the most beautiful part is the ganga aarti in the evening. Any visit to haridwar is incomplete without visiting har ki pauri.

A must see place in one's lifetime, especially the evening Aarti on the banks of the river ganges. However it does get very crowded so one needs to make arrangements from the hotel concierge. The approach is full of pilgrims who have come from far away places and as such not very clean. On the whole it is worth the experience and once you see the colourful lamp Aarti you will forget everything else.

We were there on 13th December at 7pm for a holy bath after Ganga Aarti. It was winters here, so it took a lot of courage to have a holy dip in Ganges cold water. It was very difficult to stand and bath in that cold. Still I bathed for around five minutes. Amazing stress reliving bath was that. I will advise all persons visiting in winters to take some dips and feel fresh and relaxed. Few people were around at this time of the year, so it was pleasure to see the Ganga Aarti and enjoy the bath.

I am coming back to har ki Pauri for the third time but this time I am heart broken.. During the Aarti time , the only thing that I wanted to experience again has lost its charm .. The people around the “priests” , I would rather like to call them as “beggars” were all money money money !!! For 2 mins at a stretch we could not focus on the chants!!!
Infact one of them started threatening ‘ I am watching you and will see how you leave the ground’ just because I refused to give them money!!
Message for them: Stop begging and stop robbing poor people who still have faith in God

We stayed at the Pilibhit house in Haridwar and I ran each morning from the hotel to the Hari Ki Pauri main square and beyond! It was a fantastic experience to witness hundreds of pilgrims take bath in the river and perform their morning prayers. Also, loved the aarthi experience at Hari Ki Pauri in the evening. Take your camera to capture the streets, people, water, bridges, and much more. It is a pure joy to just sit down on the banks and watch the ever flowing river. Please do not litter and pick any mess you left before leaving the place. We really want to keep this place as clean as possible for the other tourists to enjoy! Stay safe and can't wait to return!

A sacred Ghat on the banks of most revered Ganges in Uttarakhand, a must destination for pilgrims and travellers passing through Himalayas. Dotted with many temples, variety of eateries, crowds in traditional attire, this place continue to attract millions of people all over India and World. Famous Kumbh Mela is held here once in twelve years and many important festivals. Ganga Arathi in the evening is most enchanting event to see,but make sure to occupy the steps early on the other side facing the Arathi. Many legends and miracles are heard here from time to time.

The crowded area not maintained well. The parking area is on a mud ground and after charging 90Rs slushy path leads to the river bank. The priests are greedy and they bargain for their puja fees and donation to temple for annadan. As authorised personnal move around with receipt books for annadan donation why priest to demand money? The river was muddy with heavy rain and people with devotion got no hesitation in taking dips. The Ganga Arati take places in the evening delighting the crowd of devotees.
