I had been eyeing up this activity for 2 years and finally got to do it.
We just did a 30min scenic tour this time, and I loved it! I loved it so much it felt like it went fast so I need to do it again for longer next time, or maybe the wine tour option. The knowledge of the area was great, and we were blessed with a beautiful summer day to enjoy the stunning scenery with.

Thrill of touring on a Trike Bike, Ian and Yvette were brilliant hosts, with safety first, they brought us on our tour over 3 hours of fun, conversation, wine tastings and sheer enjoyment. We would highly recommend taking a tour with Wanaka Trike... Awsome experience. Thank you so much for making our visit to Wanaka and the South Island a truly memorable one!

An awesome fun way to do a wine tour. Jackets and helmets provided. We enjoyed the morning on the trike, seeing the sites and listening to Ian chat about the local area and wines. We did the 3 hour tour, and felt it was long enough. If it's cold, just wear an extra jumper and thick socks, as I can't image this tour would be the same, if you had to do it in a van.

I was so excited that my partner booked me on the 5 hour Wanaka Food Trike Tour for me and 2 girls as a kid free treat. I wasn't sure where we were going as the booking confirmation had no information but I have eaten at many amazing places in Wanaka and was excited to do so again with the input of local knowledge and hopefully discover a couple of hidden gems.
As 1 of my friends was a last minute booking we ended up going in the van instead of the trike. I'm so pleased it worked out like that as it would have been freezing on the trike in the morning and late afternoon (no mention to wear warm clothes or that blankets are provided in confirmation). I later saw the trikes do not have seatbelts nor is protective clothing provided, a risk I wouldn't want to take on a long, windy drive over the Crown Range.
It said all food, wine and drinks were included in the tour so I was expecting to come back stuffed with amazing food as I couldn't drink wine as I'm 7 months pregnant.

Our first stop was Cardrona Pub. A beautiful historic building but there was no morning tea provided (as advertised) and the coffee was very average. Not a good food destination and no apology was made for lack of morning tea.
Then we proceeded to drive to Kinross Winery in Gibston Valley. After a very windy, long drive we arrived. I felt sick from hunger due to lack of food so far and being pregnant in a car for so long. No water was offered in the car and as I hadn't realised we were leaving Wanaka area so hadn't bought any.
We arrived at Kinross and 3 tasting plates immediately arrived on top of our menus before the wine was poured. No explanation of the food, no choice or asking about dietaries. Wine then arrived for everyone. I was not offered anything alternative to drink although I am clearly very pregnant (and informed Ian the tour guide at the start).

It turned out the 3 small bland tasting plates were all that was included with lunch so I had to order a bowl of fries ( at my own expense) as I was starving. The tour guide had a full size lunch provided to him though.

The tour then stopped at a couple of scenic pullovers along the gorge and in Cromwell, drove past some amazing wineries and food stops (that we didn't stop at) then we headed to the Lavender Farm near Wanaka.
The Lavender Farm is a nice spot but not a food destination. Lavender flavoured sweet treats are all they have which is a flavour I associated with bath water and not food, and there are no dairy free options for milk with tea or coffee.

Overall it was over 3 hours of driving with 3 underwhelming stops that left us all feeling hungry. Due to being pregnant and my friend suffering from car sickness I would never have gone on this tour had I known the travel involved. The area we saw is gorgeous but it wasn't clear we were leaving Wanaka which was the area I had hoped we were exploring and tasting. So unless you want an expensive taxi ride of some beautiful windy road scenery, I would not recommend this tour, and calling it a food tour is completely false advertising.

Wanaka Trike T
We are very disappointed that you did not enjoy your tour as we would like everyone to enjoy their tours in our beautiful big backyard, but we are equally disappointed by some of the statements you have made in your review. Firstly, you quote information about our trike, which you did not experience. To clarify, our trikes DO have seatbelts as required by law and Certificate of Fitness to be on NZ roads. We supply safety helmets, jackets and gloves for all trike riders. In the colder months we supply blankets to wrap around legs if required. We do not allow people to ride on our trike tours without helmets for two reasons: 1. the safety aspect, and 2. we have a Bluetooth communication system installed in our helmets so all riders can communicate with each other. Secondly, a five-hour ‘Taste of Central Food Tour’ for two people was booked. We do not do a ‘Wanaka’ food tour. The tour description on our website is accurate stating ‘Cardrona Valley, Gibbston Valley and Wanaka’. Upon pick up you informed us that three people wanted to do the tour. As our second trike was unavailable, we graciously offered to do the tour in our luxury van so the third person wouldn’t miss out, which you gratefully accepted. You asked where you were going, and the route and stops were explained before setting off. The driving time of this tour is two hours, the other three hours are dedicated to food stops and some scenic lookout stops. Thirdly, the tour. Morning tea was provided but you declined any food when asked. Lunch is a 3-plate tasting lunch matched with wines (there is a photo of lunch example on our website that the booker would have seen, the menu does change seasonally). We cannot comment as to whether or not you were offered tea or coffee that was available to you or what explanation was given about the food as your friend asked your guide to leave your table and eat somewhere else (which is very unusual as he has always been asked to join the guests however, that was not a problem and he happily obliged). By the way, the guide’s lunch, which we pay for, is a ‘salad’ not a full lunch or gourmet lunch that our guests experience. Afternoon tea, Lavender - there are options of sweet treats like cookies, ice-cream, truffles infused with lavender from the farm and honey tasting, we consider this to be food and something a little bit special for afternoon tea. Lastly, in the booking process, you are asked ‘Do you or anyone in your party have any dietary requirements?’ This question was answered ‘no’. If you had any issues with lunch and ordering more food, your guide would have been very happy to sort this out for you if you had advised him at the time. This tour has been very popular and we have had very good feedback and reviews for it. Likewise, our destination stops have good reviews too. We take all comments on board but ask you, to be factual in what you review.

The ride out to see the blue pools was amazing . The owners were very helpful they could tell us about all sorts of things, they were very patient with us as we had a couple of slower walkers in our group they didn't rush us at all.
The ride in and out was just great and felt very safe all the way ,
We felt that this trip was the highlight of our holiday and would recommend it to anyone to try.

Wow!! If you’re in Wanaka, this is the tour to do. We did a 5 hour food tour of the region. This included beautiful scenery, informative guide, stops at Cadrona Hotel, Kinross Vineyard food and wine pairing and Lavender Farm as well as stops at look outs along the way. This is a great way to see the area and really take in the amazing scenery there is on offer. We are so lucky we found this tour to do. Highly recommended! Thanks again Ian!

We were gifted a voucher for a special birthday and upgraded it to the wine tour. Ian guide was very knowledgeable of wines and local history. Was well worth the money let alone the amazing wines we tasted. Thoroughly recommend for couples with an interest in wine.
