Lady in the shop offered guided tour, but she spoke and moved on so fast that I couldn’t really capture the stories behind the masks... there were descriptions on the wall, but the content was not as rich as what she said (even though I didn’t manage to capture a lot). Then after the tour, she reminded us THREE times to give donations...

No photos inside the museum, and no demonstration of production process.

As for the shop, I think the product quality is just average and quite pricey. I went to another wood craving workshop in Kandy, more selection and slightly lower price.

The mask factory is located south of Colombo and is not too far from the famous Bentota beach area. The are many shops along the coastal road which sell mask and other souvenirs. However this particular mask factory is probably one of the more official one.

The factory is located in a 2 storey building. The bottom left side has a small museum and a guide onsite who walks you through the gallery explaining the history behind the masks and many of the masks displayed are used in plays/dramas. For more details on the masks there are explanations written. There is no fees to visit the museum but one can give a donation. On the bottom right there is a narrow and long workshop where masks are being made by crafts man/women. On the second floor is a gallery which has quite an extensive selection of masks for purchase.

The factory is fine for a one time visit or if someone wants to purchase any souvenirs.

You get to see different type of mask, very unique to Srilankan Culture. The guide at the museum is not very knowledgeable. However, the museum is well designed and maintained. However, this museum is not for a group, if you are going there as a part of a group, I suggest break the group in smaller unit not more than 5-6 pax. The shop has good collection of mask and other artifacts. Best part is to see the making of the mask.. dont forget to notice the tree in the compound..Balsa tree, which basically used to make these masks

Stopped here on a day trip. Good range of masks and products to buy. Quite expensive but at least the prices are on the products so you can see what they are. Museum is worth looking around for a couple of minutes.

This is probably the most famous place for traditional masks in Sri Lanka. They have a workshop where you can see the artisans creating these beautiful masks. Personally this was the best part of the visit for me.
They also have a museum which is quite informative. The shop has a wide range of options. It is quite pricey and their prices are fixed, but the quality is pretty good. We did a lot of searching for masks during our stay at Sri Lanka and in hind sight i felt that if you need good quality masks this is probably the best place.
Laksala outlets also offer good quality masks in case you miss out on this place. In most smaller shops I felt the quality was just not the same.

Gave insight into the history of the masks which you see being sold everywhere in Sri Lanka.
It was a small family run business, and passed 45 mins or so.
