This area is named for the sandy medium covering the earth in the area. Visitors can see it literally on their shoes even in winter. There is a short walk and a platform so that you can see 3 of the geysers up closely.

The most spectacular thing in this part is the activity near the river bank which results in white orange & green floes of minerals that spew over the bank into the River.

This area is relatively small for hiking. We got lucky and saw an eruption of Cliff geyser. Wait for the Cliff geyser to fill in the pool, once it does it's ready to erupt. Trailhead from parking lot & back: 0.4 miles with 16ft elevation.

All of Yellowstone is spectacular but the black sand basin is stunning. Thankfully, almost all of the park is handicapped accessible.

Stopped here in the way to Old Faithful. Well worth the stop. The sun had just risen. The air temperature was still chilly so the basin's geysers and hot springs were still spewing steam. Awesome.

This Basin is in the South West part of the park and you must see it when you visit Old Faithful and other sights in this area.

Here is a little secret about YNP that many people don’t know. The most amazing part of the park is across the street from Black Sand Basin. While the springs/geysers are beautiful, the real treat is Black Sand pool. Go visit it and feel/hear the...More

the Black sand basin is in the Upper geyser basin area, you can drive there or walk there, it's not difficult to find parking space even in the noon or afternoon in mid-July which is a peak season. For me, I walk from Daisy geyser,...More
