We took the Firehole Canyon Scenic Drive. This drive takes you to and through the canyon of the Firehole River. The Firehole River gets water from the springs, so the river water has a unique color. The Firehole River flows from 21 miles from Madison Lake on the Continental Divide to Madison Junction where it merges with the Gibbon to form the Madison River.

We almost didn't go here, but because we ran out of time for certain things one day, we did this scenic drive on our way out of the park around sunset, heading towards west entrance. We had it almost all to ourselves and are so glad we came here.

It is a fairly narrow canyon drive with a river and little waterfalls sprinkled throughout. The swimming section is closed off, but I'm not exactly sure where one would park to do this anyway. It is definitely worth taking a bit of time to drive through. It was one of our favs during our trip! I will say I was a bit confused about Firehole Lake vs Firehole Canyon as the names are obvious close together. I thought they were one in the same, but they are not and the canyon one is likely where you want to be. I'm thankful we both got this last minute suggestion on the forum prior to our trip and our change of plans allowed for a great and unique driving experience here.

We ended up taking this way on our last day from West Yellowstone and are glad we did. The drive has multiple pullouts, but is a narrow mountain road. There were more than one falls to see, with Firehole Falls, being the best. Take this road, you will enjoy it!

This is a nice turn off road from the main road where are you can stop to see the Firehole Falls. It’s definitely worth the short drive back to see the Falls and explore the area a little bit.

Beautiful side road which follows the Firehole River for a couple of miles. There is a swimming area on this route.

A short, often ignored drive. A drive along a river, you are not out in the wide open spaces but in a beautiful riverside drive which features steep walls, a gorgeous waterfall beautiful surroundings.
