Driving along this road is part of the experience of going to Yellowstone. As a few other reviewers have said, even though you think the distances are short, they take twice as long as you think for a few different reasons. One, people are driving slow to take in the scenery. Two, people unexpected pullover or pull out in front of you, which means you have to slow down. Three, the wildlife. I got stuck in two Bison jams going between locations and the traffic was backed up for at least a mile and barely moving. But all of that is part of the experience, since this road is the only way to get around and there is only one lane in each directions. So prepare and plan ahead for getting stuck. I’m happy I had plenty of water and some snacks in the car because it was mind numbing for a bit, but the view and the scenery more than made up for it.

If you are driving your own vehicle make sure you fill out before you go in the park. The gas prices are stupid ridiculous. If you are driving a SUV, get an ice cooler and fill it up with sandwich stuff, water, and ice. Food and drinks are once again ridiculous priced. Yes, it is a national park.

The best part since you are still reading this. Drive slow, take everything in. You will be able to see some amazing sights. If you are looking for the animals, get up early (0600-0700). This is when the ice cooler comes in at. You can eat when you want and where you want.

When you are driving and you see people with some big cameras, there are animals. Do not get too close like closer than 100 yards, they will charge you and some really bad things can happen to you. Bison are really great are tossing tourists up in the air and they come with their own can openers. They will mess up a car and do it quick. Bears if mama has cubs give lots of space. They are wild and only protecting themselves and their family.

Have a phone charger and plug for the vehicle. I know it sounds stupid but it does happen.

If you go hiking, buy the bear spray. Look at it as an insurance policy. Watch where you walk, there are rattlesnakes. They do not have to coil to strike.

Dont get me wrong the scenery and attractions off the road are amazing but the drive itself is painful. Allow yourself twice the time you think it will take to cover your distance. You rarely can travel the speed limit, of 45mph, as people are rubbernecking and trolling along with random unannounced stops and turns. We ran into bridge construction on the main road coming in from west gate but instead of having flag persons who could allow for the peak traffic coming into the park in the AM and leaving the park in the afternoon they had automated lane control. We sat in the lineup 3 miles long getting out of the park yesterday when there was virtually no one coming in. You would be hard pressed to make it all the way around Grand Loop in one day and if you did you would not have the time to stop anywhere. Basically driving anywhere in the park is painful so lower your expectations and bring your patience.

The loops road is my favorite thing to do in the whole United States. There is so much to see and you never know what wildlife will show up. We saw some elk, deer, two bear, three coyote, and hundreds of bison.

Plan a full day to allow for an abundance of wildlife sightings and stops for gorgeous photo ops. Best to get started early in the day (6-7 am) for the best opportunities to see wildlife like grizzly bears and to avoid the crowds. Pack food and water to avoid crowds in stores and restaurants and to maximize time on the loop. It is an extraordinarily beautiful scenic drive!

This is a very pleasant drive, go early to avoid the crowds, lots of wildlife to be seen. I would recommend a 4 wheel drive to be comfortable.

The grand loop road has lots of attractions nearby the roadside, or even on the road. Herds of bison like to cross the road at their leisure, a great sight but also causing significant delays. The road tends to get pretty busy anyway.

We were in the park for parts of 3 days in the 3rd week of October 2022. There is a lot to see on both the upper loop and the lower loop and roads. While driving the upper loop there are many things to see including various waterfalls like Tower Falls and Gibbon Falls, the Mammoth Springs area and Roaring mountain. Take your time, get an early start to the day, bring food and water and enjoy the sights of America’s first National Park.
