This National Historic Site marks the location of the Waiilatpu Mission, a Presbyterian mission ministering to the Cayuse Indians from 1836 to 1847. The mission, a way station for Oregon Trail pioneers, ended tragically with the killing of missionaries by the Cayuse.

This is a well maintained park with paved pathways which will allow for ADA accommodations, although parts are really steep, but have great territorial view. The story shared the native history of the area and how this lead up to the conflicts in the area.

First visit to the historic Whitman mission national historic site. The National Park Service does a great job of interpreting the site. And the 20 minute introductory movie is fair and balanced as the history here is both interesting and complex. Be sure and climb...More

Our kids (ages 11 & 13) have been learning about the Indian wars of the 1820s-1840s. We visited Ft. Spokane one week earlier (which is awesome, too!) and learned how many of the soldiers walked there from Ft. Walla Walla. Not having enough time to...More

This historical place is just off Highway 12, on the old Oregon Trail! The museum is well organized and informative about the sad history of this mission. The grounds are beautiful, shady, well laid out and marked. A good place for a picnic and a...More
