The Ala Wai Harbor is owned by the State of Hawaii so you can walk around the harbor. Great to see the surfers and sailboats, as well as the sunset. There are 3 types of parking,
1) Paid ($1 an hour), can be up to 24 hours.
2) Free, 6 hour max. recreational only, mostly for surfers, boaters, and beach goers. Move your car by 10:30 pm, or you will be TOWED.
No late night parking allowed in this area.
3) Permit only area for boat owners, these spots are outlined in yellow lines. Don’t park between the yellow lines on the pavement. You will be TOWED if you accidentally park here.

For a place that seems so interested in the environment, wildlife conservation, and other natural resource concerns, they really do a lousy job of either enforcing rules to eliminate trash and garbage in the water, or spending some of the taxes on hiring people to clean this up.

I had never actually been to the harbor and marina before, and was totally shocked and saddened to see what a garbage dump it was. Plastic waste, paper, wood dumped in the water, styrofoam containers, coffee cups, and just generally every kind of garbage you can think of. Much of this could be removed from the shore with a net of some kind in about 30 minutes. Some needs some trash collection on the bottom.

Just a disgrace and should be corrected and then somehow enforced littering laws need to be put in place. I would be ashamed if i had a boat in there to take any guests out to my yacht because it looks so crappy.

The water has trash floating in it, the roads are crumbling and throwing up dust, the bathrooms are disgusting, the landscaping is scraggly, some docks have fallen into the water, etc. To call it “third-world” would be an insult to the much nicer marinas you find in such countries.

This Marina/Boat Harbor has the most revolting display of plastic floating in the water.

Right in Downtown Waikiki.

Ate here twice during our visit. Would have liked some sauce or mayo on my hamburger - it seemed dry. Good service.

Visited here to get on a catamaran. Had the unfortunate experience of looking at the public bathroom. No doors on any of the stalls, no toilet seats, zero toilet paper, someone’s bed on the floor. I can’t imagine the types of diseases on the floor here. Absolutely disgusting. I’ve been to third work countries with better looking bathrooms. You’re probably better off jumping into the water and peeing with all the garbage floating around in the water.

Nice sized and accessible marina is destroyed by the amount of floating debris in the water. Lots of plastic bags etc. The managers could easily employ and man and a net and scoop it out regularly to improve the marina and wider environment as this is likely to pollute surrounding beaches and wildlife.

Although the area around some of the yachts needs tobe cleaned up, one can view plenty of little fish.
Close to a lot of great Hotel Restaurants & the start of the walkway from this Harbor around the beach front from Hawaiian Hilton Village to end Waikiki. Towards Marriott Hotel end one has a little bit of sand to pass over.
So be prepared to take off shoes etc towards the Diamond Head end of beach.

I loved being able to view Ala Wai Yacht Harbor from my condo. It’s beautiful, but when you’re actually walking along side it, it needs a good cleaning. There is trash everywhere!

This harbor is ok, it provided ample spaces for boats but there are lots of homeless people and the trash was everywhere. We took a boat ride from here otherwise would not have gone.
