- Michelle WBrandon, Canada20 contributionsGreat zoo so close to the hotelThis zoo was more than I was expecting it to be! It was about a 7 minute walk from our hotel. The trees and plants were all so beautiful, but I wasn't expecting it to have such large animals. I was thinking it would have some birds and small mammals, but there were hippos, rhinos, giraffes, elephants etc. Tons of reptiles and even a petting zoo with huge koi. We ate there, and it took a long time to get our food, and the food wasn't great, so that is the one thing I would recommend improving. Not very many gluten free options either. Would be nice if they had some fruit, salads, yogurt etc. If you like animals, I would highly recommend stopping by this zoo. There was a lot of green space for our kids to run around as well.Visited November 2022Written 9 January 2023
- lemieuxgThunder Bay, Canada537 contributionsVery Great Zoo!!We visited the Honolulu Zoo in January. Great display of many animals, reptiles, birds, etc. our favourite were the monkeys who put on a great continuous show for us, in addition to the elephants who were placing muddy water and dry dirt on their bodies to cool down (it was very hot and sunny the day we we visited). There is a very good amount of animals to see; those that complain that some of the animals were not out should realize that it was too hot for them to be out - I’m sure the complainers were going into the shade to cool down and get out of the intense sunlight. We were very upset that the food cantina area sold bottled water in an aluminum bottle for an astronomical/inflated price. We ended up watering the grass with this “bottled tap water”; it was gross to drink and over $5.00 per bottle. Unfortunately, you cannot bring your own water or food into this zoo, therefore, you are stuck purchasing their products, or hold off until you leave the park. We recommend visiting this zoo.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 February 2023

This zoo, although not a large one, is well maintained with a wide variety of animals. They are doing lots of research and the displays were 'user friendly' and interesting.Visited February 2023Written 20 February 2023

It didn’t stand out in any major way for me and I kind of remember being surprised that it was a bit smaller than I expected, but good!! As always don’t forget to visit the petting zoo xoxoVisited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 27 March 2023
- Single Mum TravelsCanberra, Australia171 contributionsNice ZooNot a large zoo, but we decided to come here while waiting for our flight. The day we came was a cooler day which was nice and my son loved seeing some different animals that we don't normally see. Great relaxing break for our last few hours.Visited January 2023Written 27 March 2023
- AlanaTuggerah, Australia18 contributionsSurprisedGreat way to spend time away from the usual. I also had some mixed reviews about this zoo. However, as I enjoy visiting them I took the opportunity here. The enclosures were good, the layout was pretty easy & there was no issues getting around. Loved the flamingos & saw a number of other exhibits not seen before. Well worth the visit I thought. Don't rush look at everything.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 March 2023
- OKfamilyof4Kelowna, Canada86 contributionsThis place is great for ALL ages!We have been bringing our kids to the Honolulu Zoo since they were wee little kids. But this time, it’s just my us! Who says you need to be kids! This place is great! I love that they are using conservation to save some of the species that are heading towards extinction around the world. Thank you for having shaded areas throughout the park.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 April 2023
- Jeffry bEssendon, Australia13,793 contributionsZoo specializes in Hawai'ian animalsHololulu Zoo is the only zoo that occupies the King's Royal Grant of Lands, dating from the time when Hawai'i was a monarchy. It is an interesting zoo, specializing in Hawai''ian indigenous species. Among the unusual animals on show are giant tortoises and aardvarks. The Zoo is not very big, but it is worth spending a couple of hours here. By the way, there is differential pricing for visitors and locals.Visited February 2023Written 10 April 2023
- Martin NYellowstone National Park, Wyoming10 contributionsGreat small escape from the beachWe went there around 1 pm, wanted a small break from the beach. The zoo gives the animals enough space to enjoy themselves, you don't feel bad for any of the animals. At least I didn't. There are plenty of places to let your kids play away from the animals, a playground or this grass field. We finished everything in about 2.5 hours. It's not a full day experience, but great time.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 May 2023

My husband and I went to check out the zoo, I was amazed with the animals there,we went at almost 2 in the afternoon, and all the animals started to come out of their enclosures for feeding. The animals are well taken care of and very loved at the Zoo. N I love the information that is shared about each animal.

This is a large beautiful zoo in a spectacular setting. Wonderful selection of animals/reptiles/birds. HOWEVER, from the dirt, corrosion, film on most of the exhibit glass panels….. it was hard to impossible to see into them. Several guests I spoke to agreed with me that our phone cameras/cameras focused on the gunk on the glass, making it very difficult to impossible to take photos. I took over 700 photos, kept about 40 - which I had to doctor up with software. My husband and I really appreciate the military discount. The staff is efficient and friendly. The zoo is easy to get around in via stroller, wheelchair and walker. But come on Management!!!! Clean that glass please.

We spent about 2 hours at the zoo one morning. It was nice because the zoo is not too big and it is easy to see the awesome animals in a short time. Shade from trees was welcome when walking around. We thought that there was a good selection of animals and they were visible too. The monkeys put on a special show for us - worth going just for that!
We decided to become zoo members as it was just a few dollars more than 2 adult tickets. A year of free entry.
All-in-all, a great zoo that is worth a visit.

This is a great zoo to visit. It is flat and well spread out. There are green spaces with lots of trees and places to sit to get out of the sun. As it is beside the beach the breeze is good too. The kids zoo was great - look at the times when you can feed some of the animals we missed out on this. There are lots of animals. Many birds. A sloth. Most of the animals were out and we saw many.

Couldn't see anything that was in a glass cage, the windows were not clear. A lot of closed exhibits. Nothing guiding you through accept an occasional sign. Not sure how it works but as hot as it is here didn't see many exhibits with water for animals. $21 an adult is way way too much. $63 wasted

This zoo is beautiful, spacious and a great way to spend half of your day. I wish we’d have planned better due to the size of the zoo. We stayed about 2 1/2 hours but since they let you in and out, we could have gone out for lunch and came back.
Beautiful areas to picnic on the grass, peacocks, chickens and baby chicks running about and a great playground that my 6 year old enjoyed while my teens took selfies with the wandering peacocks.
All of the animals look healthy and well cared for.
Wish some of the exhibits had more windows. Due to the great habitat environments, a lot of the animals were hiding or just not in great view.
Great gift shop and plenty of eats nearby. Would definitely recommend.

Very sad zoo. Animals in appalling conditions. Hardly any animals to view just empty enclosures. Couldn’t see through glass on exhibits it was filthy. The few sad animals that were there should be relocated to better zoos in the world or set free into their natural environments. Do not take your kids you are just setting them up for disappointment. Enclosures had stagnant water if they had any water at all. Almost inhumane conditions.

It took us almost 3 hours to walk the whole zoo. There was a lot to see although many of the enclosures looked empty as the animals were hiding from the sun. You will definitely see elephants, giraffes, monkeys, fishes and birds. The stroll through the park is enjoyable on its own as you will see lots of flowering shrubs and trees. There are lots of washrooms along the way but not all of the food and beverage stalls were open so make sure to get water when you get in or bring your own.

We first visited Honolulu Zoo in 2010 and this venue is a great location for day out in the city.
There are a range of excellent animals to see in spacious enclosures, the weather is also ideal for the animals located in this area.
There are a range of food and drink outlets for individuals to visit & an excellent gift shop. There a couple of play areas for children which are also good fun to use.
I would say the number and range of animals is not as good as it was 10years ago (With a few empty enclosures), but the rhinos are by far the best attractions to visit.
The staff are all friendly and always happy to talk.
A good day out to visit.

This is a nice little zoo. We spent a couple hours here, the price was $21.00 (cash only). Several of the cages we saw nothing weather they were empty or hiding. There is a couple elephants, zebra, giraffes, and smaller animals. Kids would love it.

Does there a charge to park overnight at the zoo parking lot?

I believe the parking area is more street parking and maybe a lot close by. Probably you can. But there are many homeless people in the area. So do be careful of where you leave your vehicle and no belongings in it.

I did not see any so my suggestion would be no, only service dogs. If you want to go give them a call when you are there they will be only too pleased to answer the question better than I can for you.

It is set up by the hour so you deposit enough money to cover the time you estimate your visit.. it is paid into a machine near the entrance. You can always exit to add money and re-enter.

Aloha. We are planning to stay in a hotel beside Honolulu zoo for 3 nights in May, 2017. I reviewed the parking lot status of Honolulu zoo and found it not easy to find one space. Besides, the parking company has changed (confirmation needed), and guests cannot park there for whole night. I would like to ask the current parking lot condition. If we could still park there overnight? Thank you very much!

We stayed in the hotel across the street from the zoo. If your hotel is close to the zoo and it sounds as if it is, I would walk to the zoo. Not sure about the parking because we walked.
How much the entrance?
