Chateau-sur-Mer is a landmark of High Victorian architecture, furniture, wallpapers, ceramics and stenciling. It was the most palatial residence in Newport from its completion in 1852 until the appearance of the Vanderbilt houses in the 1890s.Chateau-sur-MerChateau-sur-Mer ballroom was built as an Italianate-style villa for China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore. Mr. Wetmore died in 1862, leaving the bulk of his fortune to his son, George Peabody Wetmore, and a generous allowance for his daughter, Annie Derby Wetmore. George married Edith Keteltas in 1869. During the 1870s, the young couple departed on an extended trip to Europe, leaving architect Richard Morris Hunt to remodel and redecorate the house in the Second Empire French style. As a result, Chateau-sur-Mer displays most of the major design trends of the last half of the 19th century.

Dark & brooding. Just how I like it.

This is probably my favorite mansion. It's not as opulent as the others. It's more into functionality. A lot of dark paneling and drapery but that's to my taste.

I am somewhat kidding inb my title. Who am I to turn down a mansion. That said, it was unusual and for my taste just to doggone dark. Still and all it is worth a tour. I wouldn't skip it.

I would say of the Newport mansions I have toured so far this is the one I least liked. The house has almost a haunted appearance to it as you approach it. The house is very dark inside not only from the limited lighting to the dark wood and furnishings. The wood work is fabulous both on the walls and... More

I believe some of the mansions at Bellevue Avenue allow Weddings to take place. I'm imagining how glorious such weddings would be in these Mansions. These mansions are so extravagant and luxurious, they actually are overwhelming. I went through about 6 in 2 days, and my mind was really in overdrive. I was thinking of so much. It's a good... This is the only mansion I didn't care for. Yes, it had many beautiful aspects and an interesting history. The lighting was very dim. Dark wood paneling throughout. This is a guided tour so you may have to wait a little. The room where guests wait and the tour starts has many photos displayed with bits of history on the... More

We entered the drawing room to begin our tour. Within seconds our tour guide, Penny brought us back to mid 1800's. We were regaled with stories of the life and times of the family members and friends. She talked in depth about the style of the house, the materials used, the paintings and how important the details were. This was... More

This house was built before it was fashionable to build a mansion in Newport. We enjoyed hearing the story of the family and were impressed by how much of the home's furnishings were still intact. It was ornate but not showy, very beautiful and historic. We were charmed to see a croquet lawn in the back, and the rest of... More

Only personal guided tours are offered. The rooms are very dimly lit and the groups are large so its often difficult to get a complete view of any given space.

Visitors should be aware that this mansion is guided-tour only, so you may want to try to find out the tour times before you arrive. Also, there is no good place to wait even though they require waiting; everyone waiting for the upcoming tour was standing in a fairly small vestibule, and every time someone new came in from outside... Unlike the other tours we went on, this one is guided. Our guide Penny, was knowledgeable and informative. This mansion is more Victorian than the others. Lots of woodwork in this one.
