In Newport, RI, the leading architects of the 19th and early 20th centuries built magnificent mansions for the nation's social and financial elite. These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden.

The mansions in Newport were very exciting, and you can learn a lot about history there. The audio provided for each part of the mansion was very detailed and interesting. My only complaint is that my 8-year-old daughter started to grow restless at the end...More

Absolutely beautiful summer home of the very wealthy people that inhabited the Newport community during the golden age. A must see.

We did the five mansion tour (actually only went to four of them) in the off season, which was a good move as it is very crowded in season. The mansions are of course, spectacular, but the focus is almost entirely on the wealthy families...More

On our third day in Newport we decided it was a good day to see the mansions. It seemed like everyone had the same idea. It was crowded but we still enjoyed visiting the different houses.

See the mansions from the cliffwalk by foot and by driving around the area. Support the historic foundation by selecting one or more and taking the tours.

Make sure you have enough time for this bcoz it’ll take a whole day. There’s quite a few good ones, the best are probably the marblehouse, rosecliff and the breakers. Also the 5 mansion ticket has the best value for 35$, otherwise it is 30$...More

It is incredible to see how some people were able to live. This is not the "1%," It was the .00001%. The mansions are simply amazing and incredible to see. Spend the day and enjoy.

We toured Chateau Sur Mer, Marble House, Rosecliff, The Breakers. All four houses are different and interesting. Thoroughly recommend these tours.

Breakers and Rosecliff. This will provide two different perspectives of the summer cottages. If you have the time do the beneath the breakers tour after you have done the regular tour. It is well worth the extra money to... More
