In Newport, RI, the leading architects of the 19th and early 20th centuries built magnificent mansions for the nation's social and financial elite. These "summer cottages" provided the backdrop for a society centered on sport, fashion and parties in settings of spectacular natural beauty. Ten of these properties have been preserved by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. From the homes of a colonial merchant and leading China traders of the Victorian era, to the great Italian and French Renaissance palaces of the Gilded Age, these houses span over 250 years of American architectural and social history.Visit the Newport Mansions: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer, The Elms, Isaac Bell House, Kingscote, Chepstow, Hunter House, and Green Animals Topiary Garden.

Around 11 mansions are maintained by the Newport historical society that give a glimpse of Newports gilded age. Each is a summer home for a different (but usually connected in some way) family. Most offer self guided tours, while others (such as cheatau de mer) have hourly guided tours. Opening times vary by house and season so check beforehand.

I recently visited 5 houses in one day, using the $35 ticket. You are totally able to do it and see everything, although it is a lot of walking!

We stumbled upon these mansions in our spontaneous drive thru Newport and we had to stop. They were unbelievable. The massiveness and beauty of these mansions are hard to take in and even harder when you realize they were built in the nineteenth century!

On a trip over from England my new American in laws suggested we visit the Newport mansions knowing I have been a stately home buff for years. They thought it would be nice for me to compare their stately homes to the numerous ones over here in Britain. I really enjoyed my very full day visiting 3 of the mansions... More

Great mansion tours. Well worth the trip! Great for kids too as they alter dialog along the tour for adults or kiddos.

Love the Breakers Mansion! Enjoyed each room, it was breath taking! It was a really nice experience and learned house each family lived back in the years of 1800 & 1900.

The Breakers has a clever system with headphones where the grown ups get a great and interesting tour and the kids get a separate tour, timed exactly the same but from the perspective of the house and in kid friendly speak. Tons of great stories and information to keep the littles captivated. We've toured many historical houses but I've never... More

You cannot go to Newport without visiting at least one mansion,. First timers, the Breakers is a MUST!! A close second is the Servants Tour at The Elms.. On a nice day, a walk behind The Breakers --called The Cliffwalk-- is a great way to unwind and enjoyt Newport.
