The oldest still in use synagogue in America. Rich in history that was perfectly explained by our tour guide. The Touro synagogue played an important historical part in the formation of our country. No matter your faith, this a must see in Newport.

At a glance the building is modest and unassuming and in the off season it's only open for a visit one day a week (Sunday). Plan carefully as this is a must-not-miss sight in Newport, and in the United States as a whole. Established in 1763, it is the oldest standing synagogue in the country, but more importantly it represents... More

This perfectly restored chapel, dating to the mid-1700's, is a living congregation and a museum. The synagogue's claim to fame as the country's first synagogue is deepened by hearing the remarkable letter to the congregation from George Washington, a foundational statement of freedom of religion. It is so very resonant now, this ringing affirmation of America's protection of different faiths.

A visit to the Touro Synagogue should not be missed! The synagogue has expanded to include a beautiful visitor center where there are lovely and very informative displays and a film. There is also a pretty garden. The synagogue itself is beautiful in its simplicity. The tour guide was wonderful - very informative and friendly.

We specifically went to Newport to see the synagogue. The tour guide was very informative. The displays in the visitor center also give information about the synagogue and the individuals that founded and were members. It is still used today as a place of worship with a small congregation.

We came here because my mother wanted to see it but was glad we came. The synagogue itself is beautiful and quaint and the tour gave you a brief but very informative history of the synagogue and its congregation. If you are in Newport, it's worth a stop to learn a little piece of history and see a beautiful place... More

The tour guide was very informed about the history of the Hebrew community in Newport and the history of Touro Synagogue. They allowed for pictures to be taken but not all areas are accessible.

The synagogue and visitors center offered great insight to Jewish life and culture in Rhode Island. Besides being the oldest synagogue in America, the Touro is also where George Washington maintained that religious freedom in this Country is unequivocal and not merely not merely tolerated
