The tour will take you 300 feet below the earth into the pitch blackness old-time miners, some as young as seven or eight, had to face. While you won’t have to deal with poisonous gases, you will feel the chill. The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour is open from April 1st through November 30th and is closed only on Thanksgiving Day.

On the way into the mine you take a very short rail car. If someone in the car has a panic attack, it will easily make everyone else feel not good. But it is a great experience for understanding what many workers went through.

Fun, informative local experience. Go deep into the earth and see what the minors did. Good family activity. They offer a small military discount with is.

Very interesting and neat attraction. Being from the south, I knew nothing about coal mines. My husband and I highly recommend this trip for older kids and adults. Our guide was Bob. He was funny and very knowledgeable.

Decided to do a small getaway up in the Poconos in November, not realizing many trails and whatnot are closed up for the season. Googling tours, we came across the Lackawanna Coal Mine tour. We googled other coal mine tours and many seemed to close in October for the season, this one in-particular was open until the end of November.... More

Was planning a day trip to Scranton, decided to do the Lackawanna Co Coal Mine (1st) & Steam Town...glad we did since not only was this more informative than I thought, but tied it into the coal into steam train industry. Spent a little over an hour there.

Years ago I went to a coal mine replica in a museum in Chicago -- at the Museum of Science and Industry it must have been -- and really enjoyed it. I still have fond memories of the experience, but seeing the real thing was much better. Coal has been so important for so long, and may be in the... More

Not entertainment, you actually are going into what was a working coal mine that helped fuel the industrial revolution in America, generate the child labor laws, and fuel the greatest country in the world.

Went on a lark while spending a weekend in the area. The miner who took us down was very informative and had a great sense of humor ("Is this the first time in a mine for everyone here? Me too!"). The mine is not claustrophobic, in the sense that there are no tight spaces. The ceilings are a little low... More
