If you are into statues and are trying to see them all before they get torn down (like I am), you will love this bronze statue of Deacon Samuel Chapin. The details are beautiful and you can take some great shots of it from all angles. The Christ Church Cathedral is right behind the statue. They have a sign stating that they will forgive you if you park in their lot, but you will be towed. I parked there for a minute or two and was ok. There is parking on the street if you wish to stay longer.

The area that the Samuel Chapin statue is in, is a little sketchy. I wouldn't visit him at night. There was a lot of shifty activity around him when I visited around 1 pm. In my opinion, still worth a visit because you never know when someone will get offended by this lad and want to damage him.

This statue is NOT of William Pynchon, but of one of the other co-founders of Springfield, Deacon Samuel Chapin. The name is clearly engraved on the pedestal. The statue was created by Augusten Saint-Gauden commissioned by a Chapin descendant, businessman Chester Chapin. It is also known as "The Puritan" as Chapin was absolutley not a "Pilgrim." Pilgrims and Puritans had completely opposing religious views regarding their relationship with the Church of England.

Not a statue of Pynchon but Chapin; although it is often called that.
It is also called the Pilgram; also inaccurate

As a professional researcher and former resident of the Springfield area I can say it is very well documented that this is in fact Deacon Samuel Chapin. Another early settler of Springfield, MA.

As well all know the puritans were the first non native american settlers in what is now the US. If you look into history you would see that they had a good relationship with the Indians in the beginning. The relationship grew weary after time over disagreements.

Again, this is NOT William Pynchon who was expelled from the Springfield settlement for heresy after publishing "The Meritorious Price of Our Redemption" a book that was banned and burned in Boston. This statue represents Deacon Samuel Chapin one of the key residents of Springfield. If you could see the bottom of the pedestal, his name is clearly legible. The statue was commissioned by one of his descendants, wealthy Springfield businessman, Chester Chapin. The statue was sculpted by Augusten Saint-Gaudens. I have lived in Springfield and neighboring towns all 68 years of my life, I am a professional genealogist and historian. Deacon Chapin happens to be my 8th great grandfather.

Nothing bad about the statue. Pretty nasty city. Lots of crime, lots of poverty. safest staying in your car.

This statue is right by the Springfield museums. It can be seen from the road. It’s out in the open and can be seen before and after hours. The Dr. Seuss statues are in a closed area so only an be seen during certain hours.

From what little I know of Pynchon, he seemed like a good businessman and all round good guy especially considering the time he lived.

This isn't a review, it's a correction. That statue is not a statue of William Pynchon, rather, it is a statue of Deacon Samuel Chapin.
