This was a part of a Sitka Scenic Tour and the most wonderful part of it. They rescue these bears and take care of them until they can return them to the wild. The caretaker (really don't remember his title) was so enthusiastic in telling...More

We visited the Fortress of the Bear as part of our tour of Sitka and was the most interesting part of our tour. It was the best way to view bears in a town where the ratio of bears to people is very high. You...More

The fortress is set in an old water purification plant set up by a pulp mill. They are using two of the large water tanks to hold orphaned brown bear cubs. Black bears are held in a separate facility that might be expanding since the...More

Fortress of the Bear allows great viewing and photo ops, especially for anyone who could not see brown or black bears in the wild. An hour visit is more than adequate, as the bears are in three large enclosures easily viewed from a single viewing...More

Bears were great as were the staff...informative, helpful, and connected. Taxied from town, then on to Raptor Center. Walked back to town from there..saw salmon spawning, lovely totem cultural center. Wonderful town.

Good to see happily fed bears that were saved from being destroyed. Especially the young black bears. Pretty much out of town - good for tours or if you have a car. Don't pay a taxi to get there.

I'd suggest seeing this as part of a bigger overall tour. It only takes about 20-30 minutes to look at the bears ---which are beautiful. The cab ride back and forth is $40 before tip and another $10 for the entry makes this a little...More

When in Sitka, be sure to visit this place. You can catch a taxi shuttle service to the sanctuary for 5$ a person each way. It about a 10 mins drive out of town. Once there, you pay $10 admission fee and the bears are...More
