This is not a zoo. So if you're looking for one don't come here. It's nice because these bears are orphaned. If you ask the workers they will tell you their story. I believe there are 8 bears total but split up into 3 parts. Also the observation deck can get really crowded because a lot of tours stop here... More

Good way to get up close and personal with the bears. The bears were very active and entertaining. They appear to love their enclosures and the workers treat them with a lot of respect.

This is a sanctuary and rehab centre for orphaned bears. The walkway to view the bears is located on a higher (roofed) area where you can see into 3 different areas holding all the bears. You can stay as long as you like and being only $10.00 per adult entry, it's a great deal. The bears are just gorgeous and... More

I'm glad this organization is looking out for orphaned bears. I hope they can rehabilitate more in the future.

Former cooling towers have been converted to house rescued bears both black and brown , great to watch the brown bears wade in the water eating salamon and then waiting for one of the staff to throw them some fruit, the black bears have a type of play area, all staff very informative , enjoyed it even though the weather... Wes and his team are all fantastic and treated us really well, even though they were closed and we kinda walked in. They are doing a great thing and it's really nice to see what they are doing with the passion they have! I will send people here without a doubt just due to the fantastic thing that happens here!... Excellent staff available to provide the background on each rescued bear and explain how the bears are rehabilitated and placed in safe environments, not an easy task since they cannot be re-released into the wild in Alaska. And you know your entry fee and any donation you leave is going to actually help orphaned bears. Also good to learn that... More

Fortress of the Bear is way fun! The large former cooling towers actually provide great habitats for the bears. All are rescues and forbidden to release back into the wild, their habitats are great! They have natural rivers running through that they can even fish in during certain times of the year. If you are looking for an extra adventure,... More

Here you will see how a group is doing their best to take in injured bears or abandoned bear cubs. A first of it's kind in the state. The bears are now healthy and seem to be enjoying themselves.

We did this excursion because it was rated as one of the "Best of Sitka" attractions. The staff were very friendly and informative, but the bears enclosures need to be bigger. They can see this vast forest beyond their fences and can't get to it :( My husband and I felt as though it was a situation that is difficult,... More
