We began at the Visitors center to gather brochures for some of the many areas we planned to visit. There is a few display showing animals and their footprints. We saw an exhibit about how water is brought to LA. The most fascinating photo was of the valley from the 20's. Next, we visited Paramount Ranch and strolled through the... More

My family was staying in the Ventura area and were looking for some hiking on the Coastal Range down by Malibu. We settled on the Circle X Ranch - a former Boy Scout Camp I believe in the SMM-NRA. We parked at the empty ranger's station, walked through the old camp, and took a trail that went along the valley.... More

Go to the National Park System (nps.gov) website and read up on Circle X Ranch, if interested in more information. We went to the Grotto and beyond. It was a very challenging hike (lots of boulders & volcanic rock to climb over once down there) but well worth it. Bring A LOT of water! If one doesn't care for the... More

I remember visiting the headquarters of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in Thousand Oaks, CA in 2007. I returned to Thousand Oaks in 2016 and learned that the National Park Service only maintains offices at the Hillcrest Drive location. The Visitor Center has been moved to 26876 Mulholland Highway, Calabasas, CA 91302. This location is several miles to... More

Most of the Santa Monica Mountains is either National or State park or nature reserve. We live on the northwest end of the Santa Monica Mountains, near the top of Sycamore Canyon. The main trail is 8.5mile from Lynn / Potrero Roads down to the beach. There are well over 50 miles of trails just in this one section of... More

I recently rode my bike from Malibu, up Latigo Canyon to Mullholland and back through Topanga Canyon. Great ride? Definitely. 5000' of climbing over just under 50 miles of winding road. The catch was once you dip back into the mountains much of the pleasant coastal breeze disappears. I was able to top off at the Santa Monica Mountains visitor... More

I love to walk here with my favorite music in my ears, the hills and clean air clear my mind and the walk pumps energy to my body. This place is also popular with mountain bicyclers.

This is beautiful. It was where the film Gunsmoke and numerous Hollywood westerns were shot as well as the M*A*S*H series. It has a desert like beauty... mainly because it is! There were blue hazes and clear skies with some high cloud. The views are staggering and the mountains sharp, the collage colourful when in flower and the bushes as... More

Hiked here in April with my son's family. Two girls aged 8 1/2 and 5. They had no problem hiking the trails. I am a NJ hiker - used to hiking in forests. It was a different (but no less nice) experience. You will need a hat and sunscreen as there is no shade. I also was able to hike... More
