Market Square, known as El Mercado by locals, is a great place to shop where the locals do. You can find anything from clothing to art and furniture, all with a Mexican flare, in downtown San Antonio.

I have been to San Antonio numerous times, but never to El Mercado so I tried it recently. It is a lively place to go as it gives you a feel for what some of the markets are like in Mexico. Many good restaurants and unusual shops and stores. Definitely worth taking a look if you are visiting from out... More

It was good place to spend a rainy morning . Lots of shops that seem to carry all the same Mexican things. Several Mexican restaurants. Places to sit outside and people watch . Some famous bakery that is open 24 hours that people flocked too. Stopped at the beautiful bar and a had a drink and a snack. Restaurant had... More

This is a fun place to visit. El Mercado is filled with treasures, from clothing to jewelry to leather goods and great souvenirs. You can spend an hour just walking around the market. There are several great Mexican food restaurants in the square. Be sure to visit Mi Tierra Bakery for melt in your mouth pastries. There are other shops... More

Sooooo many vendors to take a look at and lots of mexican day of the dead items, t-shirts (I bought a fabulous Frida Kahlo one at a reasonable price), beautiful embroidered blouses with some from Oaxaca which are the best ones, and a fantastic mexican restaurant called Mi Tierra. Make it a half day event and then go to lunch... More

We have been to El Mercado at least 4 times. Each time, we tour all of the stores and always find some little treasure. Even for those not purchasing anything, it's a nice place to stroll. Food vendors sell various foods in the center of the market and there are sit-down restaurants, too. El Mercado is worth the visit.

Everyone should visit the market. Exotic and colorful crafts, leather goods, clothing etc. are worth the trip. Merchants are pleasant and tolerant of window shoppers. We bought a couple of leather belts and a leather duffle bag plus an embroidered mu--mu style dress that is great for home leisure wear in the Texas summers. Our extended family vacationing there gathered... More
