I popped in looking to purchase a bottle of water (they don't sell it) and ended up doing some historical Christmas shopping. Great staff, good displays, and best of all it's free! Books on local history are also available for purchase.

The National Park Service does a great job with Visitors centers in general. We were surprised to find one in Salem. Little known fact is that the Salem Maritime National Historic site is the first national historic site in the NPS.

Visited here before was into NPS Passport Stamps (and this one is easy to get.) Very informative, clean bathrooms (important!) and easy to get to. Good starting point for your vacation in Salem.

This visitor center was pretty basic. It does give you a glimpse into the settlement life of the area. However, it's very small, and the day we were there there was a less than helpful person working there...that I'm not sure was even associated with...More

Helpful employees offer information on local tours and businesses and could tell about hours of operation. They gave us a map of the local sights and some good suggestions for our visit.
