If you are visiting the Providence area for the first time and you would like to glipse at some historic properties, then College Hill is a good area to visit. Keep in mind this is where Brown College is so it is an expensive part of town with regards to real estate. There are not many fine dining options on... More

The Benefit street area including college hill is a lovely spot to see old beautifully restored houses, stone sidewalks and visit a few nice old buildings. I will review RISD separately but it is there too. It is a pleasant and informative hour or so if you like architecture, history or just like a nice place to walk

Providence's College Hill falls between the Providence river and perhaps Thayer or Hope Street, encompassing RISD (the Rhode Island School of Design) at the bottom and Brown University at the top. It features gobs of architecturally interesting old and new buildings, lots of students, lots of longtime permanent residents, restaurants, stores, libraries, and cultural events such as art exhibits, lectures,... Separated from downtown Providence by a branch of the Providence River, College Hill is not just where college kids live. It's also a really nice, upscale community with lots of tree-lined streets and lovely older homes. Home to several prestigious campuses (Brown, RISD), it's a great walking community although in the core area, it's primarily college-affiliated businesses and eateries (think... More

Students live here, but so do working class people, as well as townies who never left. Safe, and pretty. Especially on the Brown Stadium side of Hope Street. Between Hope and Blackstone Boulevard is an assortment of housing. Also mansions the closer you get to Blackstone. Hope and Thayer is where the shopping and dining is done. A bus runs... More

Love walking up on the East Side of Providence. Plenty of little shops and restaurants on Thayer St. You can also walk through the campus of Brown University and RI School of design. Lot's of energy but also relaxing viewing the old streets and colonial houses!

The trees have yet to leaf providing especially good views of the historic homes along College Hill. It is a virtual encyclopedia of American home architectural styles. I imagine the threes provide fantastic shade for quiet strolls during the summer months!

We were in Providence to visit RISD, and were very impressed with the school, area and city. Beautiful facility and loved the connection to Brown, and the historic areas of the city.

Tree shaded streets with fine older homes morphing into double deckers in ethnic neighborhood it one direction, or downtown in the other. Providence is a decently walkable city.
