On Memorial Day, 2014, my wife and I had the pleasure of a 2-hour tour of the cemetery, hosted by Gene Fernandez whose ancestors are buried here. This is an in-depth review of Brownsville's history, beginning before the city was founded! Mr. Fernandez shares from both his research and from the tales he has heard from family and friends (he claims "girlfriends" of 93 and older). His delivery is animated and fascinating, telling of the good guys and a few bad guys from the 19th and 20th centuries. This is a Must-See for history buffs of the Old West. The occupants of the cemetery boast at least one participant from every war the U.S. has fought except the Revolution!

An amazing place, filled with history of the Southwest. We found that you really need a guide to understand what an incredible place this is. Getting into the cemetery is free. The tour is only be pre-arrangement, and has a small fee. By contacting the cemetery association, you can arrange for a guided tour that is inexpensive, and led by people who really want to spread their admiration of the history of this cemetery.

Cemeteries older the better. If you walk respectfully down the rows you can learn a lot. Size of families and the ages they passed. Before modern medicine many children and enfants died as did women in childbirth. Sobering facts in these times. Life was not easy for these people

Fun to visit the New Orleans style cemetary in historic area of Brownsville (although, not a lot to enjoy during our visit...the Railroad museum was closed because of festival days, seemed odd when that would briing more people to visit), but the best part was seeing hundreds (!) of green parrots flying around and squawking! Had seen same green parrots in Barcelona, but not near as many. We were there about 4p, near sunset.

This very old cemetery is reminiscent of the ones you would see in New Orleans, but safer. It was beautiful, in a Gothic sort of way, despite some of the tombs crumbling apart.

The city of Brownsville has been a major part of American history, from the French-American War, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War and even the two World Wars. This historic cemetery tells the story of all of them.
There are also a few unique graves that are very interesting.
The first "Auto-Pedestrian" victim in the United States is buried here. You will find her grave decorated with small toys.
There is also a grave with a very big angel that has a broken wing. The broken part of the wing is in one of our local museums. It has been said that the stone that angel was carved from, is the same stone Michelangelo's David was carved from.
Unfortunately part of this cemeteries history is that it was overrun with gangs for several year, it has been vandalized several times and it is not in the most " scenic" part of town.
The cemetery is safe, on the small side and great for history buffs (it also helps if you read Spanish.) On Halloween, and other occasions, the local museums will hold tours, and explain a lot of the history.

Driving around town and stumble on this historic grave yard. Many graves had plates describing the individual buried. Large statutes abound as do many monuments and highly decorated graves.

This interesting and well maintained old cemetery is a great place to visit when in Brownsville. It offers an opportunity to learn more about the various families who settled here. A history lesson in itself.

I have relatives buried there. If you walk around, you will see ancient tombstones, which tell of the love and sadness left by the survivors. Toward the left is an area that is fenced off and where the Jewish population of Brownsville was buried.
