Cradled in a bend of the Rio Grande, this 527-acre preserve is home to one of the last stands of old-growth Sabal Palm forest in the United States as well as one of the few remaining historic river plantations in the region. Over 4 miles of hiking trails lead visitors through the palm forest, wetland board walks, river observation deck, and multiple bird blinds. Green Jays and Chachalacas frequent our feeders, Armadillos rummage our trails, Least Grebes and Green Kingfishers hunt the wetlands, and Great Horned Owl calls haunt the forest. The recently restored 4,000 sq ft 1892 Rabb Plantation home now serves as our new Sabal Palm Sanctuary visitor center. Take a stroll through the grove, a short walk down to the Rio Grande, or join us for one of our guided birding walks or history tours (seasonal, typically November thru March - please call for schedule).

Donald Trump talks about the wall, but its already there and you have to go through it to get to the palm sanctuary, so that's an added thing to "see" visiting this museum. The docent was excellent and we actually spent more time talking to her than walking the grounds. She was very knowledgeable about the area. There is an... More

It was my dream to get here after watching the live bird cam from the Sabal Palm Sanctuary. Everything lived up to may expectations. The lovely house used as an office is interesting and has a small gift shop staffed with helpful, knowledgeable volunteers. We walked down to the bird feeding area where the bird cam is, and many lovely... More

My husband and I were here for a short visit last week and were really glad we stopped. We are birders and were in the area for the Rio Grande Birding Festival so we were looking for a particular bird (least grebe which we found). The area was very interesting with an old plantation house which you can explore and... More

Very helpful volunteer. Beautiful old home houses office and gift shop. Gorgeous native palms. Went late morning so it was extremely hot and saw a lot of waterfowl and butterflies

Dont let going across the tracks and thru the mexico wall scare you away. Still on stateside and lovely place to visit very quiet could sit on the front porch for hours. People there are very friendly and knowledgeable well worth the drive.

We loved this place, we rode our bikes to go and explore an historic place and this was it. Very well maintained and well kept. Antique furniture looks beautiful, a beautiful location.

I first visited the Sanctuary about 6 months ago and fell in love! It is pristine wilderness and feel a sense of calmness when walking the trails. We loved it so much, that we decided to take our engagement pictures here! Do stop by and visit if you are in the area!!

We saw Green jays galore I snapped a photo of a Buff Bellied Hummingbird that was really a sight to see rabbits were hopping around and some good bird blinds. Even on an overcast afternoon we enjoyed our visit. There are clean restrooms and snacks along with gifts available for purchase.

I wanted to do some bird watching while on vacation at South Padre Island. I'm glad I picked Sabal Palm to do so. There are 4 miles of well marked trails to view birds and see native habitat.
