This Smokejumper Base dates back to the early 1940's. Built to protect our forests from Japanese balloon fire bombs it continued into the late 1900s. The Museum, housed in the parachute loft has many of the original pieces of equipment. From a twin beech C-45 (they have two) to jump suits and parachutes. The packed with history. To top it... Thanks to other's reviews we made the effort to stop at the Smokejumper Museum on our drive from Gold Beach to Ashland. (RVers: yes, there is limited parking. We did have to back up to turn around but hubby managed our 36' rig and utility trailer tow just fine.) The museum is located 5 miles west of Cave Junction. Did... More

We visited the Siskiyou Smokejumper Base Museum and received a free private tour from a veteran smokejumper. There is more history in this place than meets the eye. It was great to see, and learn about, all that these amazing smokejumpers did.

I was a wildland firefighter but not a smoke jumper- those folks are amazing. Volunteers have saved this historic site and lovingly restored it. Former smokejumpers actually give the tour- or at least the day we visited, they did. Go while you can hear their stories firsthand! We weren't sure we had the time because, like most travelers here- we... More

We were lucky enough to visit this free museum when docent jim price was working. He was a smokejumper in the 1950s & had great stories to tell. We stayed 2 hours fascinated by the story of these brave young men who parachuted into the dense forest to fight the beginnings of lightning fires. Really interesting!

This is a part of history that everyone needs to know about. This place is full of stories, pictures and artifacts. A great place to learn about brave people that want to make a difference. It can be a self guided tour or wait for the people to walk you through it. Take as much or as little time as... More

Worth the stop to learn about Smokejumpers and the part this base played in the early years. Lots of photos and displays of equipment used, a hands on tour. Ex-smokejumper was the tour guide.
