Great experience! They walked you through the process quickly and it was so interesting! And free on top of all that! A great experience. Favorite thing we did in SLC.

All of the superlatives about the Family History Library are true--it is THE place to do genealogy research. I had a short time to visit, which I certainly wish had been longer. If you are a first-time visitor like me, the staff will take you in hand and point you in the right direction. Each floor has a different area of focus, and there are helpful folks there to assist. At some workstations help is literally just a click away, so please don't be intimidated by the thought of such a vast library.
When I visit a library, I always hate to leave for long because I get focused on the work. There is a nice break space on the first floor with many vending machines. There are choices for everyone, so it is easy to grab a quick sandwich or snack and get back to your project.
One of the fantastic and fun areas that I did not get to explore is on the ground floor. High tech work stations offer all kinds of programs and features to make family history fun and interactive. You can explore your ancestry in greater depth and print out family trees, among other things. I would encourage anyone to make a visit to the Family History Library if they are interested in the stories of those who came before us.

We spent a week at the library, and were amazed at how quickly the time passed. The facility is clean and spacious, with easy access to computers, copiers, etc. The staff is extremely helpful.

Staffed by helpful volunteers, this free facility allows you to do computerized genealogical research. It is definitely worth a visit, if you want to know more about your ancestors and family history. What you find will be interesting, perhaps surprising and an emotional experience. Operated by the LDS church. Highly recommend!

I've been doing genealogy for 50 years, and had questions about a missing person in my husband's line. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I didn't find the person, but got explanations about what could have happened, and resources where I might find them.
If you have a family search account, they will print you a free 9-generation poster of your family tree!!
Snack room available, with the most reasonable prices I've ever seen in vending machines. Quality sandwiches and frozen meals available as well.

The library was impressive. Each floor had many many computers with big monitors. You can request help for your geneology searching, and they are very willing to help you. For my purposes, I can get the information I need online. However, it was nice to see what the place I’m getting my information from looks like. They do have staff that will help with your ancestors search.

I did not know what to expect before I came-I knew that they would help me be able to find out more of my family history that I did not know, but my expectations were far exceeded. The staff here is so helpful. They guide you through the whole process. You have to create a free account online, then from there you start your research. The volunteer with me probably spent about an hour or more just helping me. She was able to help me along the way and help me unravel my family history. At the end, I had the option to print out a family tree fan that went back nine generations. I was able to take it back home with me and use ancestory.com to help fill in the gaps that family search missed. I would highly recommend this place-I am so grateful that my family and I visited here.

So, I've been using ancestry's website for years. Do you think it would still be worth the visit to go to the Family Library or is it mostly what you find on ancestry online?
Thanks,
Andy

I believe that there are still items that are NOT available on Ancestry or even Family Search. They are getting closer, I believe, but I think that I heard that there are some copyright issues with some items, where the item can't yet be shared online. Some items are ONLY available for viewing at a Family History Center's computer. So yes, it is worth it to go to the Library because it is amazing, you get SO much there that you get alot done so fast.

Visited your Amazing F Library twice already & going back this June, do you also do DNA Ansestry Tests??
Written 21 March 2018
Ancestry is the cheapest way to do DNA testing with many features, then you can cross-list on several of the other sites for free and get more info.

I'm trying not find out what an Affiliate Record Identifier is. I've been trying to find the name of a baby relative, Know a parent name but not the baby's. who only lived a few days. Haven't been successful but a 9-digit appeared on the form last time I tried. I thought maybe it would help me find what I need but don't have a clue what to do with it.

There is limited information in this request so I can't be certain.
Many of the records that FamilySearch and the Family History Library hold are created with Partners. There are some records that will reference a record on a Partner / Affiliate site with the unique identifier from the site. For instance there are unique identifiers on Ancestry's site that are only carried into FamilySearch to take you back to the record held on Ancestry.
While you are in the Family History Library or One of the 4,800 Family History Centers around the world you can use Ancestry Institution for free to look at the Affiliate record on their site. Many other partners have similar agreements with Family Search where access their records is free in the Library and Centers.
Hope that helps

Are Affiliate Record Identifier numbers part of your system? They're on some of my documents but I don't know what to do with them.
Written 23 February 2018
That is a unique question. So unique that I haven't a clue. Only someone versed in family history research, like a librarian, will know. Good Luck.

Do they have information for those not born in the United States too?
Written 4 September 2016
Definitely Yes. My wife's family is from Trentino, Italy. We have found records for many branches of her family from Trentino and neighboring Austria dating back to the 16th Century. A few years ago, we took a friend to the FH Library. He is an Arab Christian, born in Nazareth, and was attending medical school at Hadassah University in Jerusalem. He is now the chief medical officer for The West Bank. He was skeptical that the library would have any of his family records. He was astounded to find extensive family records written in Arabic.
My family records dating to the 16th Century from the UK and Germany are there. So the answer is YES.

Are reservations needed to have help?
Is there a cafe onsite?
Is there a dress code?
Thank you!
Written 8 September 2015
I was at the Family Search Center which requires no reservation. I think there is a café at the front. Dress would be modest. I now realize the Family History Library is in a different building. The Family Search Center is a great place to get started on your search as they have volunteers that help you.
