Unfortunately, Franz Josef Glacier has receded in recent times. From the viewpoints, you can see the stark evidence of its retreat from the barren land left behind that the forest has yet to repopulate. This makes the glacier quite underwhelming when compared to the ones in Canada and Alaska.

My husband, daughter (19) and I did the helicopter flight and walk on the glacier. Setting us up with gear and preparing us was Harry and our gide on the glacier was Jon. In fact all the staff were excellent. Jon was a senior guide and took us up and over, through and into, all sorts of glacial nooks and... More

Had a fantastic helicopter trip over the glacier. Pilot very informative and set the helicopter down for a short time on the glacier. Everyone got out for the obligatory photo. Pilot takes and sells GROUP photos and they are ready for when you get back in the helicopter. He also took photos from our cameras as well. Not cheap but... More

There is a short 1-1.5 hour hike, mostly flat to the glacier along the river and some wateralls. the hike is pleasant but not stunning and the glacier itself is remarkably disappointing (though not as disappointing as Fox). If you have been to patagonia or some nice glaciers in the Alps, don't bother if you are deciding between coming ehre... More

I have never been to a glacier before and went to the Franz Josef Glacier by a Heli Hike tour. It was a great time and great experience.. yes, by looking at the other people reviews, 2-3 hours is not enough. As glacier is on top of the mountain, if you have the money, use the heli to see a... The free walks to the Glacier and around the car-park are highly recommended, especially if you are travelling on a budget as they are all free! Do visit the iSite the day before to get information on the weather as the glacier floor can change dramatically - no-one wants wet shoes!

Franz Josef is a completely overrated glacier. If you have been to Perito Moreno (or even seen pictures), you know what I'm talking about. The glacier has been retreating for some years now and it just looks a bit small and no breathtaking at all. I enjoyed more the rainforest trek that leads to it than the glacier itself. The... More

This was a nice comfortable walk, although it rained all the way. The views were worth it. Met some friendly people along the way. I would say it was a moderate walk.

We went on the walk independently and just enjoyed being outside and in the area. Like so much of New Zealand, there are always things to see and do that are different from home. The walk up is fairly gradual and once we got to "the end" the sky was overcast. I imagine flying over the glacier would give a... More

Went the walk to the glacier, saw plenty of waterfalls and had a good experience. I had seen glaciers before, but seeing them next to rainforest was a new experience.
