Well worth the drive out of town.

Unfortunately you cannot get all the way to the Furl seal colony or the miners cave. The DOC bridge has been out since Aug '16 and no mention of when it will be replaces. But the... read more

The beach is about 20km west of the town. It is a beautiful and wild beach with a DOC campground with basic facilities

Unfortunately you cannot get all the way to the Furl seal colony or the miners cave. The DOC bridge has been out since Aug '16 and no mention of when it will be replaces. But the beach walk is nice as are the two short excursions into the sound dunes to explore the mining dredge and suction dredge. Great piece... More

Despite it being peak season and arriving early evening, we just managed to squeeze into a space in the car park. We were sleeping in our car and paid $16 camping fees for one night. We arrived just in time for the sunset on the beach - a very photogenic place at this time in the day. From the same... More

It's a twisty old undulating drive on a poor road to get to the beach. You seem to be forever going upwards yet there you are at sea level! Well worth it. The Tasman sea crashing onto the sea bringing drift wood all the way from Australia. It looks like a modern art installation, worthy of the Turner prize

Where else can you find a beach full of skipping stones? Aside from the gold prospecting (mis)adventures / history I really enjoyed the wildlife, from the sheep unafraid of cars to the petrel that allowed me to get about 3 metres from it to photograph before moving off. A friend had an old relative buried in the miners cemetery, so... More

There is no sand but a sea of large flat rounded rocks. You would never spread a blanket for sun bathing. However, the rocks are beautiful. They come in a variety of different colors. We even choose a few to take home back to the States. You can never have enough weight in your luggage.

There is a very ;long walk along the beach to a seal colony. We walk as far as the miners tunnel which was impressive and the came back as it was getting late. Very good view to Fox G about 20kms awy.

Hard to believe that in 25 minutes you can go from the mountains all the way to the ocean. We had the beach to ourselves. Not really a swimming beach. The beach gave me a sense of isolation due to its immense size.

Gillespies beach is well worth a visit even though it is a fairly long drive on gravel. The beach is lovely - lots of twisted and gnarled bits of wood with fab flat stones to make high towers. The walk to the old gold digging machine was short and interesting to see, however the walk to the seal colony was... More

Trust me you do not think you are going to see the beach till you get there, you drive from Glaciers, snow capped mountains through rain forest and hallelujah there is the beach, not many countries in the world can offer three different landscapes within 25km This is remote and about 25K's from Fox Glacier township, half of the road...
