It's almost comical how far the drive is to get to Gellespi Beach and camping area. I think a lot of people go there because there is no Freedom camping in the township. However if you plan on camping here know that you are going...More

We loved the drive to Gillespie's beach. It's a narrow gravel road, winding through the forest. This is a great area to visit if you want somewhere quiet in the Fox area - we saw a couple of other cars in the carpark, but didn't...More

Drove down here during out stay at Fox Glacier. It is a nice easy scenic drive even though the road is unsealed for the last part. The beach is stony and covered in driftwood and absolutely deserted, wonderful! There are a number of trails you...More

Once you have your high-strength sandfly spray on, you will be away! This is a beautiful stony beach... a bit rough for swimming though. You may be able to see the dolphins or seals if you are lucky. Walk for miles amongst the driftwood and...More

Drove out to Gillespies Beach before seeing Fox Glacier. We had endless beach to ourselves. Literally walked for hours. Saw rare Hectors dolphins and seals. One of our favorite South Island experiences. Note that, as always on the South Island, sandflies can be an issue.

The beach has exciting waves and great walks - but is around 12 kilometres down one of NZ's "unsealed" roads. Perfectly navigable - just assume idiots will be driving towards you completely oblivious to the fact they may not be the only people around. Interesting...More

Need to take a dirt road for 10km to get to the beach. It was totaly empty when we got there. 1 fisherman was there. No sand or services on the beach.
