We don't normally hire a guide to show us around but in this case, we did benefit from the additional information. The largest known pyramid in the world was started in 3rd Century BC and ended in the 9th Century being built in 4 stages. When the Spanish came centuries later, the pyramid looked like a large natural hill with brush and trees. When the Popo the volcano erupted, lava flowed to the area creating rich nutrients for all the growth on the pyramid. A beautiful church was built on top before the actual pyramid was discovered. There was an area that had been excavated but further work was not done due to the lack of valuables found in the excavation and also it would possibly damage the church.
Try and walk up the walkway and ramp to the top. The view of all the beautiful churches was spectacular and the yellow church was rather pretty inside. We paid 20 pesos to the manager of the church so we could take pictures.
We saw a Youtube video of walking into the one way tunnel and it was a definite no for us. It looked too narrow for me plus if a person was at least 6 feet, it would be hard.
San Andres, which was the area near the pyramid, looked like a fun area with restaurants, shops and craft vendors. Try the pulque, a fermented drink that tastes better with flavors added.

Get there early before the sun bakes you and the crowds arrive. We were there on a weekend in January, and the entire city was in festival mode. At least on the weekend, the open square to the west of the pyramid is party central with lots of activities happening and vendor stalls to help you unload some of your cash. We made the mistake of leaving the walk up to the top until mid afternoon... when the sun is at it's hottest. My advice - get to the top early on. This also will allow for the best view of Popocatepetl, the massive volcano that will instantly draw your attention. Otherwise, the sun is in your face as you view west. (Sunset might be awesome too!) The church at the top is beautiful. Besides the view of Popo, the views of Puebla and La Malinche are both breathtaking. The archaeology site around the base of the pyramid and the tunnel is also interesting. There is a lot of walking involved to see it all. Lots of restaurants and shops in town, and the new train to Puebla is very convenient. Photographers - if you are looking for that classic photo of the church with Popo in the background - that comes from somewhere in the city, not around the Pyramid.

This is so cool! I've been dying to see this ever since I watched an episode of Ancient Apocalypse (nerd alert)!!
The history is so cool and mysterious! Tickets and entry are at the bottom of the hill behind the church. When we went it was $95 pesos per person and there are guides at the entry that you can purchase for extra. I was bummed to learn that the tunnels are still closed from Covid and they do not have any info as to when or if they will reopen. The ticket also includes entry into the museum down the way. It's a small museum with guides, ceramics, a model of what the pyramid looks like underground, and some of the murals.

We did not pay for the tour, and it maybe helpful when visiting, however we still enjoyed the day. We started the day entering via the Tunnels, we then visited the Archeological area here I think a guide would have been beneficial. Then we climbed up the church where we admired the view.

I visited the archaeological site during one morning. There is a small museum next to the ticket office. It was very sunny so at the artisan market next to the ticket office I took the opportunity to buy a Cholula cap. The archaeological site is very well maintained with clear information throughout the entire route. Towards the exit there is a step that can be climbed. Remember that you have to go down later too! (Of course the pyramid has no handrails).

This is the largest pyramid in the New World. and probably the highlight of any visit to Cholula. There are three pyramids built one on top of the other and topped off with the Our Lady of Remedies church. Much of the pyramid is still buried in the hill and only the bottom part has been reconstructed. You can go up a steep hill to see the church but you will not see any part of the pyramid. The tunnels of the pyramid, which are partially excavated, are closed due to Covid.

my trip to Piramide de Cholula was fantastic i went with my family and we really enjoyed it. We have traveled to other places but Cholula is the one of the most incredible and natural place we've been. We could seen the piramids and all city on top of the piramid. On the other hand one bad thing was the people because there are too many people. that's something bad but it is imposible to aware peopleto avoid these activities. In conclusion it was awesome and considerably cheap.

This is one of the largest pyramids in size. It is mainly unexcavated so mostly looks like a hill with vegetation and a pretty church on the top. It is very old and complex since it was built in consecutive layers. It is right in the town of Cholula. It is easy to get to. There are many other things to do nearby.

First things first - the tunnels underneath the pyramid are currently closed, so don't go there expecting to Indiana Jones your way underneath as we did. With that said, it's still an interesting experience that isn't as famous and generic as some of the other landmarks you might have on your Mexico list. We hired a guide, with limited results, as his English was spotty at best. However, what did come through was interesting, and provided context we never would have had just walking around.
Be sure to walk to the top for the view of Popocatépetl Volcano, which is your classic cone volcano with the smoking crater at the top. Parking is 50 pesos nearby.

To get to Cholula from Puebla I got a local bus. It was very easy even if you don't speak Spanish. The buses leave from 6 Poniente between 11 and 13 Norte. It was marked clearly on the tourist map. The bus itself has 'Cholula' written on the windscreen. The fare was 7.50pesos each way and dropped off at the entry to the pyramids. You can't miss it. (But if you can... ask the driver)
You can walk up to the top to the cathedral to get an amazing view of the volcano and Cholula. You can access this without paying the admission fee.
The ruins are quite unique as they have a cathedral built on top of them. The entry fee was 48 pesos.
After buying your ticket you can walk through the underground tunnels. They are probably around 3 feet wide and 6 feet high (but with an arched ceiling so tall people beware). It was a bit unpleasant to be in there with a crowd so time your entry to avoid a tour group. I managed to let a group pass and have the tunnels to myself.
After the tunnels you can walk around the ruins outside which is quite a nice view. There are some Spanish and English signs around though not especially informative. Guides are available for a fee. Up to you.
Cholula is also a nice town to walk around have lunch, shop, look at buildings etc.
To get back to Puebla the bus left from outside the pyramids again. Just make sure you get one that says 'Centro' to go to the centre of Puebla as some only go to the outer suburbs. Staff at the pyramid ticket both would help if you were stuck.

Obrigado
