The botanical gardens are about a 15 km drive out of Cienfuegos. They began as a private enterprise by a sugar cane magnate who filled 4 ha with tropical plants. Over the years, the gardens expanded and today boast 94 ha. The gardens were nationalized in 1961. Getting there isn't a problem. Taxis are plentiful and cheap - you will... More

We were fortunate to have a marvelous guide named Hilda who was amazingly knowledgeable. We chatted at length about individual trees, so you have to enjoy this sort of thing, but I believe she would make anything interesting. Definitely hire a guide.

It's wild and not like any other botanical gardens I've seen but it only adds a flavour. Outstanding selection of palms. definitely worth spending couple of hours.

We combined it with a trip to Laguna Guanaroca - do this first for a better chance of seeing the flamingos. More cost effective to combine the trips if you take a taxi. A lovely, quiet, isolated place to stroll for an hour or two. If you don't take a guide, make sure you know the way back to the... More

We enjoyed our walking tour of this garden. Guide was easy to understand and very informed. They also have a gift shop and small eating area.

Our tour bus dropped us off at one end of a gravel road and collected us at the other end. Our tour guide described many rare and common trees we passed along the walk, some which had been collected from around the world and planted in the 1800's, long before the current regime. We weren't shown any greenhouse.

I'm sure it was a beautiful garden about 60-70 years ago, but unfortunately today it's neglected without signage or proper paths.

This garden is very poorly maintained and a dissapointment. It has to be said that we are used to the very well presented UK botanical gardens, but even allowing for that we felt that much more could have been done with very little investment. The cactus garden in your photo is currently closed for repairs. There is a restaurant, however,... More

Certainly more trees than plants and an abundance of bamboo. You are free to wander around which we did, with hindsight we might have got more out of our visit with a guide however we enjoyed just walking freely. We visited in December so plant life might be better at other times of the year? I suggest you combine this... More

Not really a botanical gardens as there are few flowers to see. The guide was excellent and highly knowledgeable about the many varieties of trees. Just as well as it was really a garden of trees.
