This is a nice little lake not far at all from Mount Rushmore National Monument. A kick stop and a short walk can be very refreshing.

Horsethief Lake is very close to Mt. Rushmore (2 miles), so it is a popular place. The lake sits like an opalescent jewel amid rounded granite boulders and dark conifer forest. A campground has thirty-six sites that are well shaded and dispersed near the lake. Amenities are typical of other Black Hills National Forest campgrounds: gravel area to put your... More

It's a beautiful place by the lake. They have a campground very cozy and in the middle of nature. One of my favorite places around there.

We were taking a drive by Mt Rushmore and found a small parking spot next to this beautiful little lake. Went down the stairs to a well maintained trail lakeside. Several spots to fish or just sit and enjoy the beauty of the Black Hills. Very easy trail.

Thank you for ruining what could have been a nice lunch. There was nearly no one at the lake, and when we saw an open picnic table, we thought it would be perfect. Apparently we walked past a sign that said campers only. You saw us headed that way when you were mowing but didn't say anything. Was it really... More

We stopped on the way to Mount Rushmore so I could take a few pictures. My dad and I walked down to the shore, which were down a staircase. The blue water with rocky terrain and trees make some good pictures.

You must pass the lake if traveling on Rt. 244 but to really appreciate the spot a quick drive in on Palmer Creek Road is recommended as is a walk along the shoreline trails.

We had no reservations but arrived early enough to get a nice campsite. The location is convenient to all areas in black hills. Campground hosts are amazing. Very friendly and extremely helpful. Pit toilets are clean. No showers.

Beautiful lake in a beautiful Black Hills setting. We walked along the shore line. Gorgeous! Definitely a "must do".
