We were touring park and when getting our tour tickets from ranger at visitors centre we were advised against tour as it involves climbing thru a short tunnel and climbing a long steep ladder and I have a bad knee. You can view the Balcony...More

I highly recommend the balcony house tour if you go to mesa verde. Be aware of the limitations of the tour but it isn't as bad as they make it sound.

Balcony House, named for a small balcony built onto one of the structures, is the smallest cliff dwelling of the three that are visited by tours. But it is the most exciting experience. Since tours can be booked two days in advance, they sell out...More

Balcony House requires some fitness and some tolerance of heights. You climb a 30 foot ladder to get up to it. It is not hard, but not for the non-active type of person to do. This is a ticketed tour, so get your tickets in...More

We purchased our tickets at the Visitor's Center and were never told anything about the tour. Luckily we ran into a Park Range that told us about the tour and stated that anyone with any kind of heart condition or afraid of heights should not...More

We did both the Cliff Palace and Balcony House. Very enjoyable for the family. Make sure you buy your tickets as soon as you arrive.

Balcony house is probably the most challenging of the three big houses currently open (Spruce Tree House is closed at this time due to unsafe conditions). Like Cliff Palace, this is about a half mile of walking through about 100 feet of elevation change. It's...More

We absolutely loved the tour. Be prepared for climbing three ladders (1 is 30 feet high), and crawling through a tight spot on hands and knees. Oh, and the switchback on the exit path is hair-raising!

It depends what time you arrive. If you arrive when the Visitor Center opens you should be ok. Ideally, if your schedule permits, arrive the day before and purchase for the following morning.
