This lovely old Catholic Church was one of the only buildings spared by General Sherman when he ordered the burning of Atlanta. The pastor, Father O'Riley convinced Sherman to spare his church and four other houses of worship in the great fire that burned Atlanta to the ground.

If you love religious architecture, might as well visit the oldest establishment in Atlanta. It's been beautifully restored since the1980s fire. The architectural elements - irregular tower heights and French Gothic elements - add to its impressive nature.

This is one of 5 structures left standing following Sherman's Mach to the Sea and the burning of Atlanta. It still is an active Catholic site. It is impressive, has been well maintained and served as a downtown anchor near the Georgia Capitol. As with all major cities, please remember to be vigilant!

While visiting Atlanta for a weekend I stopped in here for Sunday mass and was warmly greeted. This historic church is very beautiful and well worth a visit.

Founded by an Irish Priest in 1848, that used the sanctuary as a hospital to treat both northern and southern soldiers during the Civil War, in the years since it has retained a spirit of peace, recognizing we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. A wonderful place to visit. A wonderful place to worship.

Having lived in Atlanta most of my life, I am surprised I never visited this beautiful shrine until now. The rich history, the stunning architecture, and the detailed stained glass features make this a true treasure of our city.

The church has daily mass at 12:10 Monday to Friday and a morning mass on Saturday usually around 9:15. Sunday masses are 8:30 and 11:00 am. Other than those times the sanctuary is locked.

It was wonderful to see this church. We were allowed to walk around as we pleased. There are some people who appear to be "undesirables" on the porch steps...BUT.....they were some of the nicest people we had ever met so don't judge. One even showed us how to get to the side door to be let in and told us... More

I was on a business trip to Atlanta on December 8, a holiday of obligation for catholics. I Googled the place and found the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception a walking distance from our hotel.

Very much welcomed after ringing the doorbell. They keep the doors locked for some very obvious looking reasons on the street but you are very much welcomed. We were told all about the inside of the church and then left to browse as we saw fit. The church endured a fire and much of the interior has been rebuilt. One... More
