A gem in Atlanta

The vast amount of Civil War memorabilia held in the Atlanta History Center is mind boggling. The houses on the grounds were great and the guides were extremely knowledgeable.

If you are looking to gain some knowledge on Southern history, this is the place. Exhibits are very detailed and interesting. The property itself has beautiful grounds, and many other buildings of interest, including the Swan House.

Sadly overlooked by most visitors. Great opportunity to see period properties and to learn the history of key periods - ' the Civil War. Good exhibition about Native Americans too.

We visited this museum one afternoon. It has a beautuful setting with exhibits inside and outside. Parking is free. We enjoyed our visit very much. It is well laid out with information on local history. We especially enjoyed the part on the Civil War and actual war artifacts. Our ticket included a visit to the Margaret Mitchell house. We did... The weather was not great, so we decided to go to the Atlanta History Center, near us in Buckhead. What a great choice. We toured the museum, had lunch at the Swan Coach House Restaurant and the meandered through the Swan House next door. The Swan House is a beautiful mansion within the campus and it give you the sense... More

You'd need about 4 hours to see the whole museum and all the outside houses and grounds, if you stop to read most of the placards. I was surprised at how much information they had on the native Indian tribes as a lot of museums seem to skimp on that. Adults pay $16 however it is free for military (only... More

The Atlanta History Center in Buckhead is a wonderful place to spend the day. Their Civil War galleries are extensive, and the videos detailing turning points in the war are very well done. I was stunned to see the huge quantities of surviving Civil War artifacts. The museum does an excellent job of presenting them in context. We also spent... More

Had an excellent time. We toured the museum then went out back down a path to the Swan House Mansion. Very impressive! Loved the library and the old 1928 cookbooks found in the kitchen. This is a must see. Also, you can walk down a little path from the Mansion to the Swan Coach House restaurant to have lunch.

We had about 3 hours (with an hour lunch) and did not see all we could of the many buildings on the site. The exhibits at the main museum showcased the many icons of Atlanta, both the many positives and the some of the negatives of the civil rights era. We loved the arboretum and gained free admission to the... More
