This extraordinary zoo, one of the oldest in the U.S., underwent a multi-million dollar renovation in the 1980s and is still expanding. Its landscaping replicates the natural habitats of the numerous animals, some of which are endangered species. Four panda bears from China delight the crowds, and groups of gorillas separated by moats do their own share of entertaining.

It's a huge zoo but you don't feel it while walking becuase it feels like you're in a forest, animal petting section is supposed to be for kids; but this 25 year old guy(me) pet the crap out of those cute goats.

I would recommend to any age group. Zookeepers at exhibits to answer questions. Older kids enjoyed. They have 20 gorillas with multiple viewing sites.

Such a good range of animals, lots of viewing areas, and plenty of shade from the summer heat. Although we didn't travel with kids, there seemed to be a lot of areas and activities for them to enjoy

I wouldn't recommend leaving it. Yes, there is a security guard who rides through. However, some of the area around the zoo is not the safest. There are a lot of people walking in area.
