About
Known as “the city beneath the city,” Underground Atlanta has been the cultural heart of Downtown Atlanta since the 1900s. From basement speakeasies to the annual Peach Drop (where an 800-pound peach is dropped from the top of a building to ring in the new year), this arts, entertainment, and retail district has seen it all. Today, Underground Atlanta offers a multifaceted cultural experience featuring a virtual reality gallery, music clubs, and restaurants. travelers can also enjoy outdoor concerts, festivals, artisan markets, and more. This vibrant hub is conveniently connected to the Five Points train station, and just a short stroll from the scenic Broad Street Boardwalk. – Tripadvisor

This used to be a wonderful experience back in the 90's, and I was excited to visit again. Very disappointed - run down, smelled of urine, and was clearly a site for drug "transactions". Minimally populated art spaces. The neighborhood surrounding with closed/failed businesses and 70% empty storefronts.

Supposedly to be revitalized... but in reading the internet, it appears that those plans have been on hold for some years now.

I'd stay away.

My children and I wanted to see downtown Atlanta. I noticed it was disappointing as soon as we exit the train station. There were bums, drug dealers, drug users, and it smelled of urine. The stores were closed around 10:30am! I felt very unsafe.I turned around and walked back to the train station. I would never go back there again.

Me and a couple of friends went to a drag bar here. They had great food and bar tenders. The drag show was amazing. They ask for audience participation and do a screening of the newest episode of drag race. Very fun.

when I went there it was in the 1990s and it wasnt that bad but stilll a lot of businesses were closed and it looked like a lot of gangs were not just down there but a lot were living there. It was unsafe then and I would never go back until they have adequate security down there. I t could be a great place to see and visit but it needs to be cleaned up.

Very unsafe!! Did I mention it's not safe?? Zero family atmosphere. I wouldn't go back as a grown man, much less with my wife and kids. The place was dark and reeked of pot and urine. Most stores had closed. There is a very bad element in this part of Atlanta, which is why no matter how many millions developers pour into this effort every so many years, it will never stay successful.

A dark, danky place and almost every shop was closed. I visited about 12 in the afternoon so not sure why everything was closed. Wouldn't stop here again

So sad to hear Underground has disappeared as an attraction to love. We went there in 1973 the first time and spent the day. It took you back to how you had always read Atlanta was. Street artists, entertainers, markets and history. It was still a new attraction and people respected it. I couldn’t wait to go back. I live in Illinois but had relatives there and visited at least once a year. It was a few years before we decided to go back as things were changing there. I guess the novelty wore off or the crime crept in but I didn’t feel safe and the appeal of something special was gone. It saddened me because it had been special. I continued to hear thru the years that they were always “working on it”,trying to improve and make it safe. My relatives moved so no longer a reason to visit Atlanta these days. My dream has always been that the city would find a way to bring Underground back to life as it was meant to be. Like so many things tho a group of people in all towns find a way to destroy anything meant to entertain and maintain our history and past.

I live 25 minutes north of atlanta my whole life. Youthful memories of the fun we used to have in underground atlanta are dead. Everytime we go there, there is some junkie trying to bother us for money, or just generally harass my girlfriend. DO NOT COME HERE WITHOUT PERSONAL PROTECTION. Atlanta is trash. Do not bother with the "beltline" it is not enjoyable. 80% of the city is trash.

I first visited Atlanta in 1980. I recall the Underground as an interesting place to spend some time, so in March 2020 [a lazy 40 years later], on a visit to Atlanta, I went to the Underground again. Oh my goodness! How depressing. It's a ghost town. But that extends to the entire downtown area: no pleasant cafes for lunch, no move theaters, no department store or stores of any type really, Just Walgreens and some fast food places. And the reason? Hmm. . . . that's tricky. But I reckon it relates to the fact that downtown Atlanta was never able to become a particularly welcoming place. And why was that? Because it could never successfully get rid of the homelessness, the drugs, the panhandlers, the general lack of safety in the area. So too few people went there and so most of the businesses moved out and left what you see today. A really run down and depressing place.
