The battlefield is down a windy road near the Cold Harbor Visitor Center. There is a sign at the corner talking about Gaines Mill so you just need to turn there. At the parking area there are some information signs and of course the Watt House. I read all the signs and was interested in seeing the Wilcox memorial/monument, but it was so cold and windy that I didn't want to risk going on a two mile hike just to see the monument. The battles in an around the Richmond area are very important to Civil War history and show the importance that the Union army put on trying to take Richmond and topple the Confederacy. This is a great place to stop for a little glimpse at the strategies of the war.

This is a short distance from the Cold Habor visitor center. There is no visitor center here. This site has a map of walking trails that show key spots of the battle. The map shows several stops that do not appear to exist anymore. The trail ended at the locked gate of a field & I didn't see the trail continue into the field so I stopped my tour. I was able to see enough trail markers to figure out what happened. This is an interesting place to visit, but be prepared to do a lot of walking.

This site is near Cold Harbor Battlefield but it is part of the 1862 Seven Days Battles tour. When I was there late in the day I was alone and the farm field was eerily quiet, but once you start the path you realize that this was one of the bloodiest small battles of the war. With a combined total of 15,000 casualties, it was the heaviest fighting of this spread out seven day conflict. The lone farm house, the Watt House, served as Union headquarters during the battle but is not open to the public. The short walking trail through the field, along the fence line, leads to the spot where Confederate troops finally broke through the line. One monument, to an Alabama brigade, is sited along the trail. Such a peaceful, rural scene; such a deadly scene.

This battlefield is great. Arrived early in the morning a only a few people there. There are paths through the woods you can walk with historical markers. There are also cannons that are not sealed, one even had a blue birds nest inside. This is a must for Civil War history buffs and even those who aren't.

I love touring and walking through these historical sites. Every one of them is different but still manage to remind of of the WBTS

The story about the battle at Gaines' Mill is sobering. It is hard to visualize that as beautiful and peaceful as it is now. The park is in excellent shape. You have to get off the beaten path to find it. But it is worth the effort.

Nice walking trail that is well marked and easy to follow. Pinned in by private property so watch the signs. There is an extended walk that is supposed to lead to a view but the bushes were so high nothing could be seen.

The NPS owns a small portion of the land over which this large battle was fought. When taking the walking trail, you will learn that CSA troops charged down the relatively steep slope of a hill opposite the creek, in an attempt to overrun Union troops aligned in three tiers on an even steeper slope where the trail is.
I noticed during my time here some shallow depressions and mounds of dirt on the Union side, which might have been remnants of rifle pits and trenches.
A previous reviewer who mentioned the need for 'good visualization' is spot on. This battle site was much more open in 1862 than it is today.

If you're in the area, it's worth a stop - otherwise not really worth it. Nice small battlefield in the Richmond area.
