This Catherdral was amazing to see at night. The history behing this church is fascinating. We enjoyed reading the information and seeing the inside of the church. Beautiful!

This is a big impressive church but there are also ruins which show that the site was a political and cultural centre, one of 2 episcopal sees. Iceland's first shool was in Skalholt also. There is some information to read in front of the ruins and you are of course welcome to go inside the church which is large and... More

The church at Skálholt is located on the Golden Circle. For centuries it was one of Iceland's two Episcopal sees. It used to be the setting of our first school and the bishop resided there. The church is beautiful with excellent accoustics and the underground passage is interesting. You can also read up on the archaeology digs in Skálholt.

I did not know that this was an archaeological site that was determined to be the beginning settlement of Christianity in Iceland. That was cool. You can see the ruins from the original settlement. The church is huge, not sure who attends it, as the community is very small. Loved the turf house on the property, so unique! The views... More

We stopped off at Skalholt cathedral whilst doing our own golden circle trip in a hire car and what a beautiful little stop it was too! The Cathedral was on a little hill over looking some rather stunning views. Inside was quite modern and beautifully fresh with lovely stained glass windows and art. Before arriving we thought there was only... More

This church is high up with lovely views around the countryside. The church today is modern but the history dates back 1000 years. An interesting church next door and gravestones to view.

Skalholt cathedral was a stop off on the golden circle excursion. When we first arrived I was stunned by the scenery and landscapes surrounding the church! It's quite secluded and off the main roads which added to the peacefulness of the church! We were pleasantly surprised when we went into the church to see a local choir singing! Would highly...
