Nestled in the heart of the Lincoln tourism district, SAAHM preserves and tells the rich, the conflicting, the tragic, and the triumphant history of African-Americans in Springfield and the surrounding area. The museum is more than just the race riot that inspired the creation of the NAACP. One question is all you need, what happened under Lincoln's shadow and does this alter his legacy?

I didn't know that this museum existed. We were on our way to the Lincoln Tomb and it was right outside the gates. It is small but there are somethings that I wasn't aware of that the tour guide told us about.

Enjoyed the experience. There was a brochure that asked you questions, that you could walk around and find the answers, sort of like a treasure hunt.

It was really good to see what life was like for African Americans. Most history books leave out people of color, like they were not there. Located at the entrance to the cemetery that holds Lincoln's Tomb, makes it very accessible for tourists. Has it's...More
