One of the coolest museums I've ever been in. The displays were top notch and there were hours and hours of materials to look at.

We visited here on an impulse and were rewarded. From the moment we walked in, this was the nicest museum staff that really went above and beyond. The docent at the front desk even called over to the Capitol to see if I could get into the next tour. The main level attraction that takes you through the geologic, flora,... More

We went to Changes on the first floor. It was a really nice exhibit showing the science supporting environmental changes experienced in Illinois. Scientists from diverse backgrounds and fields were represented as well. On the basement level is an area for children. Our children set a diorama ocean scene, added bones to a mastodont, displayed artwork and pressed foliage, clothed... More

Pros: we had the museum pretty much to ourselves for over an hour maybe because everyone was at the st. Patrick's day parade or because it was cold out, admission is free for kids, kids area is very interactive Cons: the exhibits require a lot of reading and there isn't a whole lot for a 5 year old to touch... The Illinois State Museum has been a favorite of our family for years. I lived in Springfield for nearly 40 years, so not only have I taken my children there but grandchildren too. There are many displays that stand the test of time, and enough changing displays to keep it interesting.

IL State Museum is like many others. Collection of art, children's play area, fossils, local heritage and history and a sprinkle of interactive exhibits to boot. You will go here for a museum experience, you will be good with the visit, and you will be glad it was only $5 per adult. The basement children's area has a fun "fossil"... More

This museum often gets overlooked because of the Presidential Museum. It is a great place for young kids and has lots to offer in activities. It has struggled over the last year or so because of the state's budget cuts but it is really trying to come back. It's worth a stop if traveling with children.

When our 6 year old granddaughter visits, we always hit the Illinois State Museum. We all enjoy the main floor historical, geological and archaeological exhibits. Also, we always go to the basement discovery and interactive play area, which is also fun for all. This visit, however, we learned about the second floor exhibits, which were entirely new to us. Excellent... More

The Illinois State Museum has so much to see - plan on spending at least a few hours here. My favorite permanent exhibits are the four full-size dioramas detailing lives of pre-historic Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian Native cultures and historic Indians. Reasonable fees and free to seniors and ISM donors. Parts of the museum are "old-school"/classic museum and others are... More
