Flattop is a great day trip - it's strenuous, but not horrible. I'm 55 and still do it. We have a bulldog that managed the hike... It's a very satisfying hike, with an amazing view at the top, especially on a clear day. On hot summer days, there can be a little too much traffic for my personal taste, but... More

This is a must-do trail if you're looking for an outdoor experience while visiting Anchorage. The hike is a bit demanding giving the incline, but the stunning views from the trail make it worthwhile.

There are some great trails around Flattop Mountain. Just south of Anchorage, you can be in the middle of nowhere. Powerline Pass Trail starts at the base of Flattop and continues through the valley all the way back to a remote lake. The trail is very easy to follow and and doesn't require any special equipment other than water and... More

It is beautiful up there: Beautiful sunset and city view. It is not far from downtown, worth the drive.

So, hiking in the winter, deep snow, is way harder than hiking in the summer. I was not exactly prepared for the difficulty level and only made it 3/4 of the way up but even from where I stopped the views were gorgeous. Many people hiked up and snowboarded or skied down. Make sure to fuel up with a good... More

We did the trail after about a foot of fresh snow. It was a glorious though tiring experience. Kinda like doing high knees for 2 hours, we lost the trail and just followed a pair of snow shoe tracks, which in hindsight should have been a clue that we were out of our depth. Nevertheless we soldiered on and reached... More

After arriving in Anchorage, we grabbed an early dinner, and headed out to go hiking. Arriving around 7 or 8 pm, the parking lot was nearly full, but we grabbed a spot and headed out for a hike. The trail is relatively easy until the last couple of hundred yards when it gets steep with less than great footing. However,... More

It is so beautiful, you see the whole city in front of you. On a clear day you can see all the way to Denali! There is a part where there is a short hike, or you can do the longer hike to the top of Flattop! I have not gone all the way up, but my 8 year old... More

You don't find a much easier hike with views like this. Other than avoiding massive amounts of dog feces along the trail edges going up and back, this hike can practically be ran. There is a little hot of a climb at the top, hit each of the different peaks in the same go to maximize the views.

I have hiked Flattop a few times. The last time was on a clear and sunny summer day. It takes around 4 hours roundtrip to summit the mountain and come back to the parking lot. Bring water and snacks.
