Cool place to stop off of Seward Highway. Amazing vistas and watching the tides. The kids could stay here all day climbing on the rocks and playing on the beach. Very windy. TIP - look carefully both ways before walking over the train tack

My wife and I live in Anchorage and we have visited Beluga Point numerous times since 1994. It is located on the Seward Highway that originates in Anchorage. It is a turn out on the right side of the higway (as you drive South) and is located approximately 14 miles South of Anchorage. Just the scenery of the drive to Beluga Point ( and of course the beauty continues for miles heading further South) along the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet is spectacular. In fact it has been rated as one of the most 50 beautiful and scenic drives in the entire United States. We love the autumn of the year to drive the Seward Highway.

PLEASE follow the signs posted for your safety. On the day of our visit we did not see any belugas but did witness the emergency response teams retrieve someone who'd ignored the signs, went past the railroad tracks, and up to the edge, only to find themselves in an unfortunate outcome. The entire area is beautiful, but there is no picture worth your life.

The Seward Highway hugs the dramatic shorelines of Turnagain Arm, one of the most beautiful stretches of highway in America. Turnagain Arm draws its name for British explorer James Cook, who was forced to “turn again” and again when the waterway was not the fabled Northwest Passage during his 1779 voyage.
The bore tide, the wave of water that rushes down the arm, can top six feet tall, with top speeds of 20 mph as the water level changes by up to 40 feet every six hours.
Along the way, near Beluga Point, we spotted at least 8 to 10 Beluga whales - and close to shore. The adults are white, and the young ones are grey. Great place to whale watch. Free parking area.

Belugas are often seen here from mid-July through August. Excellent spot to watch the bore tide. The incoming tide crosses the width of Turnagain Arm and can be six feet high as it rushes in. Look for beluga whales rolling in the surf. Be sure to check tide schedules for the best times. Free parking.

Beluga point is a short drive south of Anchorage on the road to Seward/Homer. It is possible to see Beluga whales there but not guaranteed as the tide comes in.
Of equal interest is the “bore tide”. This is a breaking wave that travels the length of Turnagain Arm. Here are some times for specific areas when the bore tide typically arrives after low tide in Anchorage:
Beluga Point: 1 hour 15 minutes
Indian Poin: 1 hour 30 minutes
Bird Point: 2 hours 15 minutes
Girdwood: 3 hours
The best times to see a good bore are when the low tide in Anchorage has a high negative value, particularly if the good low tide is followed.
Good luck in seeing the hire tide and make sure you stay off the mud flats.

Beluga Point is just a short drive out of Anchorage the drive out of Anchorage and down to Portage is well worth it. High tide is the key to spotting and enjoying the whales.
We road by here twice at high tide and were not disappointed. They do not seem to breach like their large cousins and because they are white they can be overlooked if there are white caps. Yes it is windy BUT this is the bay and thats the beauty of being out there, and smelling the wonderful salt air and feeling the wind in your hair.

We stopped twice at this point. The first time, the weather was so bad and windy that only the children went out for a few seconds. The second time, we had more luck and the view was fantastic. We were even able to spot some belugas.

If you love scenery, this is the spot for you. If you love whales, specifically Beluga whales, this is the spot for you. If you love trains, this is the spot for you. If you love all of this for free, this is the spot for you. A scenic spot along the highway offers great scenery, beautiful views, the Alaska Railroad, and Beluga whales. This has to be one of the best scenic spots in the USA. Don't miss it. The whales are amazingly close to the shoreline and the train goes right by the water where the whales are diving. You can look one way for endless shoreline and the other way for mountains and sky. If you are in a hurry and can only make one scenic stop when driving from Anchorage to Seward, make sure this is the stop you make!

This is a great pull over stop for some beautiful scenery. We saw a nice sunset and a decent sunrise, we were fortunate enough to see a handful of beluga whales in the bay right at sunrise our last morning the first week in a September.
